A Virginia Navy sailor says one sip too many turned into the most horrifying drink experience imaginable after he allegedly discovered a dead rat inside a can of Monster Energy. And unfortunately for him, he says he didn’t notice it until he had already consumed most of the drink.
The stomach-turning story is now making waves online after sailor John Witt shared what happened while stationed in Virginia. According to reports, Witt had been casually drinking from a can of Monster Energy when he suddenly realized something inside the container was definitely not supposed to be there.
What he claims he found left him completely horrified. After reportedly spotting what appeared to be a dead rat inside the can, Witt said he immediately became sick. In a voice recording shared by WTKR News 3, the shaken sailor could be heard reacting in disbelief.
Virginia Sailor Finds Rat In Energy Drink
“I’ve just ingested that. I just had drunk that,” he said. According to Witt, the situation escalated quickly after the discovery. He reportedly vomited multiple times and alerted his military chain of command, who directed him to seek medical attention at an emergency room in Portsmouth.
And this is where the story somehow gets even more surreal. Witt claimed medical staff examined the situation and allegedly confirmed the object inside the can appeared to be a rat. He also said doctors reassured him that the ingredients inside the energy drink would likely reduce the risk of serious illness and that his immune system should be able to “fight it off.”
Doctors reportedly monitored him for roughly 48 hours afterward as a precaution in case any side effects developed following the incident. While Witt appears physically okay, he admitted the experience seriously messed with him mentally. “It’s been very traumatic for me,” he explained afterward.
Finding literally anything inside a sealed beverage is enough to send most people spiraling. But discovering what allegedly looked like a dead rat after already drinking nearly the entire can? That’s the kind of story that permanently changes the way someone opens beverages forever.
In fact, Witt admitted exactly that, saying he no longer plans to drink anything he can’t fully see beforehand. Which suddenly makes transparent cups feel a lot safer.
The Internet Is Appalled
The story has sparked major conversations online about food safety, manufacturing concerns, and how something like this could allegedly happen in the first place. Social media users were immediately divided between horror, skepticism, and pure nausea.
“Get a good lawyer,” one person commented. “Now I don’t wanna drink energy drinks anymore,” said another. “My sign to stop drinking energy drinks,” a third person wrote. “Why are we still buying these drinks?” a fourth comment read.
The situation also taps into a growing online obsession with contamination horror stories. Over the past few years, viral internet culture has turned food and drink safety incidents into massive headline material almost instantly. Whether it’s claims about foreign objects in meals, mystery substances in beverages, or restaurant mishaps, people cannot look away from stories that trigger collective disgust.
What especially unsettled viewers was the fact that the Virginia man claimed the can appeared sealed before he opened it. That detail fueled even more speculation online about manufacturing processes and quality control standards.
