Kawhi Leonard has been a name known by NBA fans for years now. From his time in San Antonio, his championship run in Toronto, and most recently, his massive contract scandal in Los Angeles, California. Yet Leonard is not alone in all of this; his uncle, Dennis Robertson, is also taking a lot of the heat. Over the last few days, the NBA’s punishment for the Clippers organization has surfaced, and with that, the drama just keeps growing.
The Clippers have also played second fiddle in California, as the Los Angeles Lakers are by far the state’s most popular team. Yet, that did not stop the organization from taking a big swing, and ultimately a miss. By bringing in Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, the Clippers hoped to take LA by storm. However, in order to get Kawhi, the Clippers allegedly had to act as a “Power Agent” between four different companies. That, in turn, resulted in tens of millions of dollars in endorsement deals going to Kawhi.
Now, according to the League, Kawhi Leonard had no knowledge of these dealings. It is stated that it was actually the doing of Kawhi’s uncle, Dennis Robertson. Leonard had reportedly turned over all the power to his uncle regarding his contract details. This has led to Robertson being “Banned from all basketball business going forward.”
NBA Fans Reacts To Kawhi Leonard’s California Basketball Scandal
Social media users on X had a lot to say about this as well. Many users would then hurry to leave behind their own thoughts regarding the situation. “So any player can just let someone they trust break the rules on their behalf and say they didn’t know?” asked one. Another wanted to know, “He still got the money though, right?” One more commenter pointed out, “How convenient for Kawhi.” Finally, one last person’s comment also read, “Kawhi not knowing is dumb; it’s all lies.”
While Kawhi Leonard’s uncle is taking a lot of heat, it is still not as much as the Clippers’ organization is dealing with. The NBA brought the hammer down on them, and they lost quite a bit of draft capital as well. The organization will be set back many years due to this abuse of power, and that is just very sad for the loyal California basketball fans.
At the end of the day, this is an absolutely horrible look for Kawhi Leonard, the Clippers organization, and the state of California. Hopefully, this is enough to deter any other teams from attempting something like this, but who knows for sure. At this point, every team in the league could be guilty of doing something similar to this.
