What started as a simple family outing at the lake quickly turned into something straight out of a ghost story for one South Carolina woman. TikToker Keliza21, known online as @keliza21, recently shared the bizarre experience after visiting Lake Hartwell with her family.

At first, the trip seemed completely normal for the South Carolina family. Just a casual day exploring the shoreline and letting the kids roam around the beachy areas near the water. Then two men walked up and changed the entire vibe.

According to Keliza, the strangers asked if she knew where the cemetery on the island was located. At that point, most people would already start mentally preparing for a horror movie situation, but Keliza decided to do some digging instead. And the deeper she looked into the island’s history, the creepier things became.

South Carolina Woman Finds Out Cemetery Island History And Lore

In her TikTok, she joked that her “flabber has been ghasted,” which honestly feels like the perfect phrase for accidentally stumbling onto haunted island lore during a family day trip. After doing some Googling, she learned the island has a very real and very eerie history tied to Lake Hartwell.

Back in the late 1700s, Revolutionary War soldier John Harris Jr. was reportedly granted the land, which later became Harrisburg Plantation. He and his family lived there for years, eventually creating a family cemetery on top of a hill where relatives were buried over generations, per BroBible.

And this is where things take a dark turn. In 1950, the federal government ordered the land flooded as part of the Flood Control Act. The remaining descendants eventually gave up the property but there was one thing they reportedly refused to do was move the graves.

So the plantation disappeared underwater while the cemetery remained above it. Today, that hill still exists as a small island in the middle of Lake Hartwell, reportedly holding around 59 graves. Naturally, locals eventually gave it a nickname that sounds terrifying enough on its own: Ghost Island.

Ghost Island Sounds Like A Creepy Place To Visit

Others simply call it Cemetery Island, which honestly isn’t much more comforting. And apparently, this isn’t some obscure local rumor either. The comments section filled up quickly with people who already knew exactly what she was talking about.

“We call it ghost island. I’ve been camping on that island for years,” one person stated. “It’s literally called Cemetery Island!!” said another. Which somehow makes the situation even funnier because Keliza basically wandered into one of South Carolina’s creepiest local legends completely unaware.

The internet reaction was pretty much split into two groups: people fascinated by the history and people who would’ve immediately sprinted back to the boat. One commenter summed up the panic perfectly: “I’m running back to the boat.”

What really makes stories like this go viral is the mix of real history and spooky folklore. Because, unlike made-up ghost stories, this place actually exists. There really are graves sitting on a tiny island in the middle of the lake, surrounded by decades of rumors about apparitions and strange sightings.

And of course, once people hear words like “ghost island,” their imagination takes over immediately. However, the South Carolina mom later mentioned she planned to return by herself to investigate further without her kids around, which is either incredibly brave or the exact opening scene of every paranormal documentary ever made.
