That is not to say that Mitchell has not achieved other feats while rocking the wine and gold, though. One of the most impressive in recent memory was when Spida dropped 71 points on the Chicago Bulls. Mitchell seems to remember that night fondly, as in a recent interview he gave a little insight into what may have allowed him to perform at such a high level.
Ohio’s superstar shooting guard claims that the night before his legendary performance he was celebrating the turn of the New Year with his friends and family. Spida also states that he did, in fact, have a “Few Drinks” that night. This is allegedly the first time that Donovan Mitchell had ever drunk alcohol before a game. He even goes as far to say so in the interview on Cousins with Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady.
That night, Donovan Mitchell was a different beast. He single-handedly willed the Cleveland Cavaliers to that overtime victory and scored a whopping 71 points while doing so. At one point, he even got his own rebound on a missed free throw and put it back up for two more points. After that, the crowd was not about to let them lose that game, even with the team exhausted in overtime.
Social media users were shocked to hear this as well, as many of them would rush to leave behind their own thoughts regarding the news via X. “Drunken Spida might be a different dude,” said one. Another wrote, “You don’t have to tell anybody when, but to not trying that again and seeing what happens is stupid.” Finally, one last person’s comment also read, “And he never did it again? Is he even trying to win, or just collecting the paycheck?”
Donovan Mitchell’s legendary night will live on forever not only in NBA history but also in Ohio basketball history. At the time of writing this, Mitchell’s 71 is still the Cavaliers franchise high in points scored in a single game, and will most likely stay that way for quite some time. Mitchell and his Cavaliers are still in the hunt for the elusive championship, and with the NBA season right around the corner, they may have another shot at it.
