One California family is still mourning the death of their grandfather. However, when they opted to buy an urn for his ashes from Amazon, they didn’t expect what they found inside and the drama that came afterward.

Mark Culbertson and his family reportedly bought several urns through Amazon after losing their grandfather last year. The plan was simple and sentimental: to divide their loved one’s ashes among family members so everyone could keep a personal memorial.

Everything seemed normal to the California family at first. Most of the urns arrived empty, exactly as expected. But one allegedly came with something already inside. And not just packing material. According to Culbertson, the family quickly realized one urn contained what appeared to be an “ashy substance.”

California Family Shocked When They Buy Urn On Amazon

The discovery immediately raised alarm bells because the material reportedly looked disturbingly similar to cremated remains. “This one has an ashy substance in it and we did a little more research. They look like ashes,” Culbertson explained while showing the urn to reporters, per PEOPLE.

Imagine opening what’s supposed to be a memorial item for your own family member and suddenly realizing another family’s loved one may somehow be sitting inside it. That’s the kind of thing that sticks with you.

Instead of simply brushing it off, Culbertson said he immediately contacted Amazon hoping to get answers about how something like this could even happen in the first place. But according to him, the response felt more like handling a routine return than addressing what could potentially be human remains.

Reportedly, because the order had been placed last year, Amazon allegedly offered an apology and refunded the family $19.99 for the urn. Culbertson claimed that was essentially where the conversation stopped.

“Amazon wasn’t working with us at all. They just wanted to give us a refund and stop right there,” he later said. And honestly, social media users seemed especially disturbed by that part of the story. People online quickly pointed out that this wasn’t some defective blender or damaged phone charger. If the substance truly is someone’s ashes, then another grieving family could unknowingly be missing part of their loved one’s remains.

Ashes Already In The Urn

That realization completely changed how Culbertson viewed the situation. Rather than throwing the urn away or mailing it back into some warehouse system, he reportedly became determined to find answers and hopefully reconnect the ashes with whoever they belonged to.

“I just want them to be back with their loved ones and be taken care of the way they want to be taken care of,” he explained. After local news outlets began covering the bizarre story, Amazon customer relations reportedly contacted Culbertson again and suggested bringing the urn to a local funeral home for further examination. According to reports, the company even offered to reimburse any related costs.

Still, Culbertson said the response didn’t fully sit right with him because he wanted accountability and clarity, not just another customer service solution. “We don’t want to send them back to you and be sitting in a warehouse. We want answers. We want them returned to the family,” he said.

The Family Wants Answers

The situation has now sparked a wave of conversations online about third-party sellers, memorial products, and how something this deeply personal could allegedly slip through quality control unnoticed. Many people admitted the story genuinely unsettled them because urns carry emotional weight most products simply don’t.

Others praised Culbertson for refusing to treat the discovery casually. Instead of ignoring it, he recognized that the ashes, if authentic, likely belonged to someone who mattered deeply to another family somewhere. “Somebody screwed up,” one person said online.

Amazon later reportedly released a statement saying they were looking into the matter and working directly with the customer to gather more information. The retailer also stated they had been in contact with Truepoint Memorials, the company that sold the urn through Amazon’s platform.

This California family is still trying to get answers, but for now it remains a mystery.
