There’s something about solo road trips that always feels a little cinematic. The open highway, gas station snacks, emotionally devastating playlists, and the occasional terrifying interaction with a stranger that ends up haunting you for the next several years. One Louisiana woman says that’s exactly what happened to her during a drive to Tennessee that suddenly turned into something straight out of a paranormal thriller.

Lauren was reportedly driving alone from Louisiana to Fayetteville, Tennessee back in November 2025 while heading to a funeral. According to a story later featured on TikTok creator Ashleeinc’s “Spooky Scary” series, the trip was supposed to be quiet and uneventful. Instead, it became one of those stories people immediately start dissecting on the internet because every detail somehow gets stranger than the last.

Everything seemed normal until Lauren crossed into Alabama sometime around 4 p.m. While driving, she spotted a rest stop and decided to pull over, even though the place initially looked deserted enough to star in a low-budget horror movie. Apparently, she only stopped because the next rest area was over 30 miles away.

This Spooky Scary Storytime/glitch in the matrix story came from Lauren: “In November 2025, I stopped at a nearly empty Alabama rest area on my way to a funeral. A stranger looked me dead in the eyes and said: “Be safe. Don’t get lost.” I then lost almost 9 minutes of driving time with no explanation after seeing the same stranger fly by on the interstate in the opposite direction. My friend heard the phone distortion too. I still think about that warning.” #UnexplainedStories #paranormal #TrueScaryStory

Eventually, two other cars arrived, and Lauren noticed a security guard nearby, which made her feel slightly less uncomfortable about being there alone. After using the restroom and stretching her legs for a bit, she headed back toward her car around 4:21 p.m. That’s when things reportedly took a bizarre turn.

As she held the door open for a man believed to be in his 50s, the two exchanged casual small talk while walking toward the parking area together. Then, out of nowhere, the man reportedly glanced toward the trees and ominously said, “It’s gonna be dark soon, so don’t get lost.”

Already creepy. But according to Lauren, it got even weirder moments later. She noticed the man was walking toward a red car parked a few spaces away where a woman appeared to be standing beside the vehicle with its hood open. Lauren reportedly offered to help, but the man refused and repeated the warning again, this time more intensely.

“Promise me that you won’t get lost.” At that point, most people would probably peel out of that parking lot like they were escaping a horror film, and Lauren essentially did exactly that. But as she drove away with her window cracked open, she claimed she heard the man shout one final warning behind her. “Don’t get lost.”

Lauren reportedly tried calling her best friend immediately after getting back onto the highway because the interaction bothered her so much. Despite supposedly having full phone signal, the call allegedly filled with static, echoes, and distortion before disconnecting entirely. When she finally managed to reconnect, she reportedly had to switch to AirPods because her phone had mysteriously disconnected from her car’s Bluetooth system.

This Is Scary

Then came the highway confusion. According to Lauren, the interstate suddenly felt oddly empty and unfamiliar. She claimed there were virtually no exits, no businesses, and barely any signs except for a single Love’s gas station. What made the situation even stranger to her was that when she later drove back through the same area, the road looked completely different than she remembered.

Naturally, TikTok users immediately launched into theory mode. Some people brushed the entire thing off as stress, anxiety, or exhaustion from traveling alone to a funeral. Others were fully convinced the story had some paranormal element attached to it. One commenter even claimed the area around Eutaw, Alabama and Exit 40 has reportedly given other travelers a similar sense of disorientation over the years.

Whether there’s a logical explanation or not, the story clearly struck a nerve online because it taps into one of the most universal fears imaginable: being alone, far from home, and suddenly feeling like reality itself shifted around you.

“Sounds like an episode of The Twilight Zone,” one person stated. “She quantum jumped,” another said. “In another timeline she got lost!” a third comment read. “This stuff is very real,” a fourth person wrote.

The Louisiana woman’s story is so creepy and sounds like it belongs on television or a movie. However, others have also said they’ve encountered similar situations across the country.
