What’s Her Secret? — Woman Wins Texas Lottery Four Times: ‘You Would Never Know She Was A Millionaire’

In Texas, everything is bigger including the mystery surrounding one woman who somehow managed to beat the lottery not once, not twice, but four separate times. Over nearly two decades, Joan Ginther quietly racked up more than $20 million in lottery winnings, turning herself into a legend without ever seeking the spotlight. To some, she was simply the luckiest woman the Lone Star State had ever seen. To others, she may have been something far more fascinating: a math mind quietly cracking the code.

Ginther’s winning streak played out entirely in Texas, beginning in 1993 and stretching all the way to 2010. Her first big score came with a $5.4 million jackpot, followed years later by a $2 million Holiday Millionaire scratch-off, a $3 million Millions and Millions ticket, and finally a jaw-dropping $10 million win from a $50 scratch-off, per Globe.

Two of those winning tickets were even purchased at the same convenience store in Bishop, a detail that only fueled speculation. Experts would later calculate the odds of winning four major lotteries in that time frame at an almost laughable one in 18 followed by 24 zeros, a number so extreme it barely feels real.

Naturally, whispers followed. Ginther wasn’t just any player tossing spare change at scratchers. She held a PhD from Stanford and had taught college-level math in California. That background alone made people wonder whether she had uncovered patterns others missed.

Statistician Alan Salzberg suggested she likely focused on games with better odds and reinvested her early winnings strategically, rather than relying on blind luck. In other words, she may not have beaten the system she may have understood it.

What makes the story even more intriguing is how un-flashy Ginther remained. Despite her massive wins, she reportedly lived modestly, dressed simply, and avoided attention. According to longtime friend and beautician Fran Wooley, “You would never know she was a millionaire.” Ginther played the same numbers for years before her first win and was known for buying stacks of tickets, often handing them out to friends and acquaintances just for fun.

Ginther Won Over $20 Million

Her generosity became one of her defining traits. Ginther helped people buy homes, quietly paid for college educations, and stepped in when friends faced financial hardship. After her father passed away, she gave his house to the man who had maintained the yard.

When Wooley’s home burned down in 2011, Ginther deposited money directly into her bank account without fanfare. While some millionaires collect cars or mansions, Ginther’s biggest indulgence was extended vacations in Spain.

Her life had its chapters: teaching math in California, a relationship with a trucker, a move to Las Vegas, and eventually a return to Texas, where she settled into a high-rise near San Antonio’s River Walk. Even there, neighbors say she was simply kind, funny, and unassuming. Ginther passed away quietly at 77 in April 2024, leaving behind one of the most puzzling lottery stories the state has ever seen, a reminder that sometimes in Texas, the biggest legends are the ones who never ask to be noticed.
