New York authorities say a hiking trip through the Adirondack Mountains turned into a chaotic adventure. One that the group won’t soon forget. Things went off the rails when two of the hikers reportedly tripping on psychedelic mushrooms freaked out and called 911, convinced their friend was dead.
A ranger with the New York State Department of Forestry responded to the Saturday emergency call, which claimed a hiker had died on Cascade Mountain. According to The Mirror, the two distressed hikers also told the dispatcher they were lost.

The dispatcher quickly picked up on the fact that the pair was in an “altered mental state,” according to the agency. Rangers arrived, helped the confused duo down the mountain, and transported them to a nearby hospital for evaluation. They were also scolded about the dangers of mixing drugs and outdoor adventures.
Mushrooms And Mountains Cause Chaos In New York
The strange situation is a prime example of why staying aware in nature is so important. And how dangerous hallucinogens can be in unpredictable environments. While psilocybin, the active compound in psychedelic mushrooms, has shown promise in treating PTSD, addiction, and depression, large doses can completely warp a person’s sense of reality, as this trip clearly proved.
As for the friend they thought had tragically passed? He was alive, well, and had already phoned in to let authorities know he was unharmed. The group later reunited at their campsite, no doubt sharing a surreal story they’ll be telling for years. “Talk about a bad trip,” one commenter writes.
Despite the lighthearted ending, officials stress this could’ve gone very differently. Nature isn’t the place to gamble with your safety, especially when your reality is already distorted.
