When parents in North Carolina sent their kids off for the new school year, the last thing they expected was chaos erupting inside an 8th grade math class. Yet in Lenoir County, that’s exactly what happened when brand-new teacher Alena Chabot allegedly showed up intoxicated and ended up scaring students, throwing things, and even putting her hands on kids. It was just the second day of school, and this teacher’s career in the classroom was already over.
Of course, North Carolina parents were left stunned. Schools are supposed to be the safe space for children, the idea that an adult in charge of middle schoolers could be drunk in class is something that most people aren’t prepared for. One parent described the entire ordeal as “hard to believe,” and it’s true.
According to parents and students, the incident went from confusing to downright terrifying. During her second day of teaching at E.B. Frink Middle School, Chabot reportedly returned to class behaving erratically. At one point, she tried to perch herself on the edge of a back table, only for it to flip over—sending her crashing to the floor in front of a room full of stunned 13-year-olds. If that wasn’t enough to unsettle the kids, things only escalated from there.
Drunk North Carolina Teacher Causes Chaos On Second Day Of School
Witnesses say Chabot was carrying a half-empty bottle of liquid and hurled it at a student, actually striking him. Parents have said their kids felt frightened and unsafe, especially when Chabot allegedly grabbed and shoved not one, but two students during the chaos. Eventually, the school principal had to intervene and pull her from the classroom.
“Ms. Chabot came back into the classroom and then she went, and she tried to sit down on the edge of one of the back tables—flipped the table over, fell onto the floor at which point the principal came in and the principal pulled her out of class,” the parent of a child in the class stated. “She was holding about a half-empty bottle of water, and she threw it at one of the students and actually hit him.”
However, the bottle may not have contained water as police reportedly found an open container of alcohol in her purse, along with prescription medications, per ABC News 12.
Parents Are Furious
Chabot’s bizarre behavior didn’t just stay a school scandal; it quickly turned into a criminal case. Court documents reveal she now faces two misdemeanor charges: disorderly conduct on school property and being intoxicated and disruptive. The official paperwork alleges she caused a disturbance, was too impaired to teach, and physically put her hands on students.
Parents say there’s no handbook for this sort of thing. As one frustrated mom put it, “nobody tells you what to do when your kid’s teacher comes to school drunk.” Lenoir County Public Schools wasted no time cutting ties. In a blunt statement, the district confirmed that Chabot’s employment was terminated effective immediately.
For now, Alena Chabot is out of a job and facing charges that could follow her for years. Meanwhile, the North Carolina students who witnessed the ordeal are left with a story they’ll never forget, and unfortunately, one that paints a disturbing picture of how quickly things can unravel in a place that’s supposed to be safe.
