Most people expect a little awkwardness on their first day at a new job. What most employees don’t expect is to be heading for the exit before they’ve even made it through the morning. That’s exactly what one Colorado nurse claims happened after she accepted a position at a detox facility and allegedly encountered what she described as a deeply unhealthy work environment almost immediately.

The Colorado nurse, Leslie, shared her experience on TikTok, where her story quickly exploded online, attracting more than a million views and sparking a heated discussion about workplace culture in healthcare. According to Leslie, warning signs appeared the moment she arrived. “Immediately the vibes were rancid,” she recalled while describing her first impressions of the facility.

While first-day nerves are normal, Leslie said this felt different. Despite bringing more than a decade of healthcare experience to the job, she claimed coworkers were cold, dismissive, and unwilling to help her navigate the onboarding process.

Things allegedly became even more uncomfortable when the charge nurse accused her of arriving three hours late. Leslie says she produced an email showing both her scheduled start time and the date she was instructed to report to work.

Looking back, she now believes that moment should have been her cue to leave. “I should have just run away at that point,” she admitted. But according to Leslie, the drama was only beginning.

While waiting for assignments and direction, she claims she overheard conversations among staff members discussing how they had previously driven the nurse manager to quit. Hearing that allegedly confirmed her growing suspicion that something was seriously wrong behind the scenes.

Leslie described the Colorado atmosphere as “absolutely toxic.” The situation became even more concerning for her when she allegedly struggled to get assistance for a patient. As someone with years of healthcare experience, she said one thing she cannot tolerate is seeing patients treated as inconveniences.

“I don’t like when nurses act like patients are inconvenient,” she explained. She later reported a patient’s tremors to a provider and felt positive about how that interaction went. Oddly enough, she said that became another red flag in her eyes.

After leaving the room, Leslie claims she overheard coworkers talking about her behind her back. At that point, she says she had reached her limit. Rather than continue her shift, she chose to send an email directly to the facility’s medical director before heading home.

She Stood Her Ground

“I don’t want to be associated with those types of nurses,” she said. It’s important to note that the allegations shared in Leslie’s videos have not been independently verified. In a follow-up video, Leslie claimed management responded to her concerns.

According to her, the facility reviewed what happened, involved human resources, and even discussed offering her a charge nurse position. The update surprised many viewers who initially assumed the story would simply end with a first-day resignation.

Online, reactions were mixed. Some healthcare workers said they immediately recognized the kind of workplace culture Leslie described, while others cautioned that viewers were only hearing one side of the story. Still, her experience struck a nerve because it highlights an issue many professionals face regardless of industry: sometimes a workplace reveals its true culture much faster than anyone expects.

“Healthcare is toxic,” one person said. “Healthcare is like high school all over again,” said another. “The hatefulness in healthcare really made me not want to be in healthcare anymore,” a third person wrote. “Why are people so miserable?” a fourth comment read.

For Leslie, what was supposed to be the beginning of a new chapter in Colorado reportedly lasted just two hours. Yet those two hours were apparently enough to convince her that staying would have been a much bigger mistake than walking away.
