In California, one woman has decided that her days of showing up to family and friends’ backyard cookouts may be officially over. While most people hear the word “barbecue” and think of good food, good company, and a relaxing afternoon outdoors. However, she says her latest experience delivered the exact opposite. By the end of the day, she wasn’t planning her next visit. She was making a promise never to attend another one.
According to the woman, the gathering started like any other invitation. She was told when to arrive, what to bring, and assured that everyone would be getting together for a fun afternoon. What she didn’t know was that the event would become a perfect example of why expectations and reality don’t always meet somewhere near the grill.
The first issue involved something most barbecue guests care deeply about: eating. She says the invitation instructed everyone to arrive around 1:30 in the afternoon. Naturally, she assumed food would follow shortly after. Instead, hours passed with no sign of a meal. By the time dinner finally appeared around 6:30 that evening, she says she was beyond hungry. According to her, the long wait left her with a pounding headache and a noticeable drop in blood sugar.
California Woman Says She’s Done With Family Barbecues
For her, this wasn’t simply an inconvenience. She says health concerns made the situation much more serious than a little impatience. If the delayed meal wasn’t enough, the second surprise arrived once cooking preparations began. The woman says she was asked to bring a side dish, which she happily did. She spent time making her homemade potato salad and arrived expecting to contribute to the meal.
Instead, she claims many of the other guests showed up carrying ingredients rather than finished dishes. That might not sound like a problem until people reportedly started looking around for volunteers to actually cook everything. The woman says she quickly realized that guests were being treated less like invited visitors and more like unpaid kitchen help.
After already waiting hours for food, she had no interest in spending the afternoon standing over a grill or preparing meals for everyone else. The third issue was the one that completely ended any chance of a return visit. During the gathering, she says several relatives of the host arrived at different times throughout the day. Each time, the woman sitting next to her allegedly leaned over and delivered the same warning. Watch your purse.
“Sticky fingers situation. Yep, that is a big nope for me,” one follower writes.
“The disrespect of people inviting people and making them wait 5 hours just to eat,” another chimes in.
“Baby these barbecues are strugglleeee these days,” one more agrees.
Not once. Not twice. Three separate times. According to the woman, she was told certain family members had a reputation for having “sticky fingers.” Whether the warnings were justified or not, she says the experience made her uncomfortable enough to keep one eye on the conversation and the other on her belongings. Nothing ruins a relaxing barbecue quite like feeling the need to perform security duty on your handbag.
Fine And Dandy And Safe At Home
Looking back, the woman says the combination of delayed food, unexpected cooking duties, and repeated theft warnings was more than enough to convince her she’d had her fill of family cookouts. And honestly, many people online found her complaints surprisingly relatable. After all, nobody wants to arrive hungry, spend the day working, and then worry about their valuables.
For this California woman, one barbecue was all it took to reach her limit. After spending hours waiting for dinner, being asked to help cook despite being a guest, and hearing repeated warnings about keeping her purse close, she says she has a much better plan for future weekends.
She’ll stay home, make her own meal, eat whenever she wants, and enjoy the peace of knowing her purse is exactly where she left it. Sometimes the safest seat at the barbecue is the one at your own kitchen table.
