A North Carolina police officer is out of a job after a shocking video captured during an arrest spread across social media and ignited a firestorm of criticism. The incident, which unfolded in Shelby, quickly became the center of public attention after doorbell camera footage appeared to show an officer repeatedly striking a woman during an arrest.
The North Carolina video was shared widely online, prompting outrage from viewers and leading to protests from community members demanding accountability. What happened before the footage began remains unclear. However, what was visible in the video was enough to trigger an internal investigation and ultimately cost one officer his badge.
According to Shelby Police Chief Brad Fraser, the department completed an administrative review of the incident and determined that the officer’s actions warranted termination. The officer had already been placed on administrative suspension while the investigation was underway. The matter isn’t over yet, either.

Authorities have also forwarded the findings to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, which will conduct an independent review to determine whether any criminal violations may have occurred. As public scrutiny intensified, city officials moved quickly to distance themselves from the actions shown in the footage.
Chief Fraser did not mince words when discussing the incident. “While this incident does not reflect the values of the Shelby Police Department, it does reinforce the importance of holding ourselves to the highest standards of conduct,” he said, per ABC 7.
He went even further, describing the officer’s behavior as “disturbing and inappropriate.” Fraser also emphasized that the department would not accept excessive force from its officers. “I want to be clear that the inappropriate use of force is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by me, the Shelby Police Department or the City of Shelby,” he stated.
According to officials, officers were conducting a criminal investigation when they encountered a woman they described as suspicious. The woman involved was later identified as 34-year-old Cherrie Moore.
The viral footage appears to show Moore being struck multiple times during the arrest before another officer seemingly steps in. As often happens with videos that circulate online, viewers immediately began debating what happened before the recording started. But regardless of what may have occurred beforehand, many people found the images difficult to watch.
The Internet Was Shocked
Among those most affected was Moore’s family. Her uncle, Michael Moore, spoke publicly after seeing the footage and described the experience as heartbreaking. “You can only imagine how I feel to see my niece bodyslammed to the ground at 90 pounds,” he said.
The emotional reaction from family members mirrored the response from many viewers online, who questioned whether the level of force used was necessary. Meanwhile, city leaders acknowledged the damage the incident has caused within the community.
Shelby City Manager Justin Merritt thanked police leadership for moving quickly to investigate the matter and said the city now faces the difficult task of rebuilding trust. “While yesterday’s incident is still raw and difficult to understand, today marks the beginning of a path forward to repair the damage that has been done,” Merritt said.
At the center of the controversy is a broader conversation that communities across the country continue to wrestle with: where the line exists between lawful enforcement and excessive force. For many residents, the firing represents an important first step. For others, questions remain about what exactly happened that day and whether additional consequences could follow.
“Can’t believe what I just watched,” one person said. “This is horrible,” added another. “Wasn’t expecting that,” a third person chimed in. One thing is certain: a doorbell camera captured a moment that has now become a major talking point throughout North Carolina, and the fallout is likely far from over.
