Most people heading to the gym expect to worry about treadmills, workout routines, and maybe whether they’ll skip leg day again. One California woman ended up dealing with something far more dramatic.
What started as a completely ordinary walk quickly transformed into a rescue mission after Sara and a friend heard someone desperately calling for help. The strange part? They couldn’t immediately figure out where the voice was coming from. At first, the California pair scanned the area, expecting to find someone nearby in distress.
Instead, the cries appeared to be coming from a parked bus. That’s not exactly where most people would expect to find an emergency. “My friend and I were walking to the gym, and we heard a faint screaming,” Sara explained. “We looked around for a little bit to figure out where it was coming from, and once we realized it was the bus, we kind of just looked at each other.”

Even after locating the source, Sara wasn’t immediately convinced she should get involved. Like many people these days, she worried the situation could be some sort of setup. “I was a little hesitant to open it because I wasn’t sure if it was a trafficking scam or something,” she admitted, per PEOPLE.
Still, curiosity and concern won out. When she opened the compartment door where the sounds were coming from, she discovered something nobody could have predicted. A bus driver was trapped inside.
The woman quickly emerged and explained what had happened. According to the driver, she had been enjoying her lunch break when an unfortunate chain of events left her locked inside the bus’s storage compartment.
“I was taking my break, and I tried to get up, and I closed it down,” the driver explained after being freed. Sara later shared footage of the rescue online with the understated caption, “Was just out for a stroll.” Unsurprisingly, viewers found the entire situation both hilarious and baffling.
The story became even better when the bus driver herself showed up in the comments section. “Omg thank you again!!!! It’s me [I’m] the idiot that got myself locked in there,” she wrote, laughing about the situation afterward.
Sara was thrilled to see the woman was okay, responding with relief and humor. Despite the lighthearted tone online, Sara said the driver seemed genuinely shaken after finally escaping. “She was very grateful to have had us walking by, and she seemed pretty shook up!” Sara said.
The Internet Has A Lot Of Questions
As the video spread across social media, viewers flooded the comments with questions. Many wanted to know how long the driver had been trapped. According to the driver, it wasn’t very long, though it certainly felt that way in the moment. “Lmaoo honestly I don’t know, felt like forever. My guess is 10 mins or less lol,” she explained.
Others suggested emergency tools like air horns. The driver agreed that would have been helpful, joking that she also could have avoided the whole situation by bringing her phone along. “Air horn woulda def came in handy lol or I shoulda just kept my damn phone on me,” she wrote.
“How does this even happen?” one person asked. “This might be an original experience,” said another. “That could’ve been sooo bad!” a third person weighed in. “This is so scary,” a fourth comment read.
Fortunately, this bizarre California story ended exactly how everyone hopes these situations end with laughter instead of tragedy. And while plenty of viral videos involve conflict, outrage, or drama, this one serves as a reminder that sometimes being in the right place at the right time can make all the difference.
