‘I Can Slap My Son All I Want’: North Carolina Couple Confronted After Woman Allegedly Sees Them Roughly Discipline Young Child

North Carolina woman confronts parents for hitting son
TikTok

A routine trip to a store turned into a heated public showdown after a North Carolina couple found themselves being confronted over the way they allegedly disciplined one of their children. Now, a viral TikTok video has thousands of people debating where the line exists between parental discipline and behavior that crosses into something much more serious.

The clip begins in the middle of an argument. A man holding a toddler and a woman believed to be the child’s mother can be heard defending their actions while speaking with another woman who was recording the encounter.

The parents appeared frustrated that someone had questioned how they handled their child. During the exchange, both adults firmly argued that they had every right to physically discipline their son if they felt it was necessary. The woman filming, however, clearly disagreed.

5/25/26: The man in the video dragged his child (not the baby in the video, a small boy that looked to be around 2-3 years old) across the parking lot by the wrist so forcefully that he was lifted into the air several times, he then THREW him into the passenger seat violently and wound up with his hand all the way behind his head to “spank” the child, though the child wasn’t flipped over, so it definitely wasn’t directly on his butt – I’m not sure it even counts as a spanking. He then got into drivers seat and started screaming in his kid’s face so loudly that his face turned bright red and his neck vein bulged out as the kid put his hands up, sobbing and shaking his head no. The father then leaned over and punched his child in the chest with a closed fist to slam him back into the seat, then picked him up and threw him into the back seat and continued screaming at him. This video was taken after another man approached the car and told the father that the store manager was calling the police after witnessing him drag the child through the store and that violence is never needed. My partner and I gathered his license plate info as the other nice man called the police. The father proceeded to scream at us, ask if we had kids to which we responded “yes and we’ve never laid a finger on them” (fur babies in our case but still). He then defended himself by saying corporal punishment is allowed in NC. At this point I started the video. After the video the man holds his crying child up in the air and flails him around trying to show us “there were no bruises”. They drive off before the police arrive. We gave the police a full statement, and then the couple returned to “defend themselves”. There were 5+ witnesses and the police are investigating. I’m posting this to expose people who think it’s okay to hit children, if they were okay doing this in public I can’t imagine what happens in private. See something, say something, don’t let the bystander effect silence you. #wilmingtonnc #traderjoes #seesomethingsaysomething

While the video itself captured only the confrontation afterward, the person behind the camera later provided a much more detailed explanation of what she claimed she witnessed before she started recording. According to her account, the incident involved another child, not the toddler seen in the clip.

She alleged that the father grabbed a small boy who appeared to be around two or three years old and pulled him across a parking lot by his wrist. The witness claimed the child was lifted off the ground multiple times during the encounter.

Things allegedly escalated from there. According to the woman, the child was then placed into a vehicle in a manner she described as forceful before the father allegedly raised his hand and physically disciplined him. The witness further claimed the situation continued after everyone got inside the vehicle.

She alleged that the father began yelling at the child and later struck him in the face. Those claims have not been independently verified, but they quickly fueled concern online after the video spread across social media platforms.

Adding another layer to the controversy, the woman who shared the video stated that store employees had also witnessed portions of what occurred. Despite the allegations, the parents reportedly maintained that their child was not injured and rejected suggestions that they had done anything wrong.

The Couple Defended Their Actions

According to the witness, someone at the scene contacted law enforcement after observing the situation. However, she claimed the family left before officers arrived. What happened next surprised many viewers. Rather than simply leaving the situation behind, the couple reportedly returned to the location later and continued defending their actions during the recorded confrontation.

That exchange became the centerpiece of the clip, with viewers watching the parents insist they had acted appropriately while the woman behind the camera argued that what she witnessed was abusive. “I can slap my son all I want,” the father stated, adding that he hit him ont he backside. As often happens with viral parenting debates, reactions online were sharply divided.

Some viewers argued that parents have the right to discipline their children and questioned whether social media captures enough context to fully understand what happened. Others believed the allegations described by the witness were deeply troubling and said they were glad someone chose to speak up rather than ignore the situation.

One thing most people seemed to agree on is that witnessing a confrontation involving a young child can be difficult to ignore. As of now, the woman who posted the video says the matter remains under investigation.

Until more information becomes available, the viral footage continues generating discussion online, with people debating not only what happened in that North Carolina parking lot but also how far parents should be allowed to go when disciplining their children.
