Naming a baby is no small feat. It’s the first big decision parents make that sticks with their child for life (well, unless you’re this Alabama mom, in which case… not so much). In a TikTok saga that’s both relatable and slightly chaotic, a woman named Kate has gone viral for documenting the many times she changed her newborn daughter’s name, and the internet is divided.

Let’s rewind to where it all began. Like many parents, Kate was handed a birth certificate in the Alabama hospital shortly after giving birth and felt immense pressure to fill in that blank space with something timeless, meaningful… and immediate. Caught up in the moment and family tradition, she landed on Margaret Joan, a sweet nod to her husband’s grandmothers. Cue the regret.

While the name itself is classic and charming, Kate couldn’t shake the feeling that it just didn’t match her baby’s vibe. “Is it controversial to change your newborn’s name after you leave the hospital?” she asked in her first now-viral TikTok video. It’s a fair question and the kind that launched a name-change journey no one saw coming.

Kate admitted that although she liked “Margaret Joan” in theory, it just didn’t feel right. So she pivoted to Madelyn, a name she clearly felt better about. So much so, she even posted a cute TikTok celebrating her baby girl as a future Taylor Swift fan.

But just three days later, things took another sharp turn. Apparently, the name Madelyn started to lose its sparkle once Kate realized it was… well, everywhere. “We just felt like it was way too common,” she confessed in a follow-up video. “Can’t do it,” she added, exasperated. So once again, the baby formerly known as Margaret Joan, then Madelyn, got a whole new identity.

Enter: Winona Joan. Final answer. (For real this time. We think.)

That’s right, Kate decided to go with Winona, a name that definitely stands out from the crowd, and still keeps the sentimental middle name Joan. “Winona Joan. Final answer,” she declared, hoping to close the baby-naming chapter once and for all.

But of course, this being TikTok, the internet wasn’t about to just let this wild name ride go unnoticed. While some praised her for being honest and trusting her instincts, others raised eyebrows at the level of indecision. A few even questioned the long-term effects of such public flip-flopping on her daughter’s digital footprint. (Because yes, these videos live online forever.)

TikTok Sounds Off

“Poor girl,” one person commented.

“See you all next week for the new name because everyone will be saying ‘oh, after Winona Ryder?'” wrote another.

“Wait…are you serious?” a third person asked.

“She’s not a game,” a fourth comment read.

Still, Kate (a self-proclaimed “weird mom) isn’t backing down. She seems confident that she’s finally found the name that fits—and if anyone has an issue with that? Well, they’re not the ones raising little Winona Joan.

Honestly, the pressure to pick a unique, meaningful, and aesthetically pleasing baby name is real these days. Social media only makes it harder, with momfluencers and parenting forums offering endless unsolicited opinions. If anything, Kate’s journey might be a little dramatic, but it’s also refreshingly real. Parenting isn’t perfect, and neither is picking a name while recovering from childbirth in a hospital bed.

So here’s to Winona Joan from Alabama. May that name serve you well in life.
