In a disturbing turn of events out of Austin, Texas, what started as a peaceful Saturday afternoon at Barton Springs’ beloved dog beach quickly turned into a horrifying display of hate-fueled violence, and now, the internet is calling for justice.

On July 26th, a group of friends, including a trans woman, were targeted in what’s being described as a violent, transphobic hate crime. The incident took place at the Barton Springs spillway, a popular Texas hangout where locals gather to cool off, walk their dogs, and enjoy the water. But for this group, the day turned traumatic when three unidentified men reportedly began harassing the women, escalating into full-on physical violence.

According to a Reddit post, the trouble started when the three men began hitting on two women. When the women’s trans friend arrived and joined the group, things took a dark turn. The men allegedly became aggressive, spewing transphobic comments and even accusing the other two women of being trans as well, all while making inappropriate gestures near their chests.

The situation rapidly escalated. The three men began shoving the women, and that’s when a true hero stepped in as a bystander who witnessed the assault and tried to break it up. That act of bravery cost him dearly. The Good Samaritan was beaten so severely that he suffered a concussion, gashes to his head, a bleeding ear, and a broken jaw that now requires surgery.

As one of the victims tried to follow the attackers toward the Zilker parking lot to get their license plate number, one of the men (identified in photos as the one in orange shorts) reportedly picked her up and slammed her to the ground. The three suspects then scattered and fled the scene before police could arrive.

Photos and video footage of the suspects have since been shared. The images show the three alleged attackers: one in orange shorts, another with long dark hair and green shorts, and a third — a Hispanic man in a cowboy hat. A police report has been filed, but as of now, a detective still hasn’t been assigned. “No one deserved this,” one person stated.

The Reddit poster, along with countless commenters, is urging anyone who recognizes the suspects to contact the Austin Police Department or Capital Area Crime Stoppers. Social media is now doing what it does best: crowdsourcing justice when the system seems to be moving too slowly.

Major Injuries Were Sustained

Meanwhile, the family of the injured Good Samaritan has launched a GoFundMe to help cover his medical expenses. He’s a construction worker without health insurance, a father to a young boy, and now faces weeks off work on top of the emotional and physical trauma of the attack. The post describes his condition in heartbreaking detail, noting that he’s reluctant to seek care due to the overwhelming cost. Surgery is needed, but funds are tight.

“Our son stepped in to defend them, which resulted in him being brutally assaulted by these same men. He ended up sustaining gashes to his head, a bleeding ear, a broken jaw, and a concussion. He now needs surgery for his broken jaw; but because he’s a construction worker without health insurance, he’s reluctant to get the care he needs. On top of that, he was told he’d have to miss 2–3 weeks of work—time he can’t afford to lose.”

This entire incident is a stark reminder that hate crimes aren’t a thing of the past. Even in progressive hubs like Austin, Texas, members of the LGBTQ+ community still face real threats. And sometimes, it’s the kindness of strangers like this brave bystander that keeps people safe.
