A Tennessee high school student is refusing to stay quiet after a school board meeting turned into what she described as a humiliating and deeply uncomfortable public moment. And honestly, the internet seems just as fired up as she is.
The controversy started during an April school board meeting in Washington County when longtime board member Keith Ervin made comments to student Hannah Campbell that immediately raised eyebrows. In footage from the livestreamed meeting, Ervin can reportedly be seen touching the student before saying, “God, you’re hot, you know that? Where do you go to school at?”
The moment spread quickly across social media, with viewers questioning how an adult elected official thought that was an appropriate thing to say to a teenage student during a Tennessee public meeting. What may have made the backlash even worse was the reaction afterward. Instead of removing Ervin from the board, officials voted only to censure him after holding an emergency meeting, per PEOPLE.
Tennessee Student Confronts School Board After Member Made Harmful Comment Toward Her
That response clearly did not sit well with Campbell. About a month later, the Tennessee student returned to the podium and absolutely unloaded on the board in a speech that has now gained major attention online. And she did not mince words.
Campbell described the interaction as “unwelcome,” “sexist” and “derogatory.” But she also made it very clear that her frustration extended beyond just Ervin himself. “The failure to act on the board’s behalf was and is equivalent to his actions as it has hurt me just as much,” she said during the meeting.
She also called out the board chair directly, criticizing officials for controlling public reactions in the room while allegedly doing nothing in the moment to stop their fellow board member. “To watch the chairperson bang her gavel to control the public, and yet not use it once to control her own peer was disgusting,” Campbell said.
The Tennessee teen then escalated things even further by accusing the entire board of failing the community. “Gaining global attention for sexual comments and assault is not the reputation that Washington County deserves,” she said before adding that every member shared responsibility for what happened. “I believe that you are all cowards.”
She’s So Brave
Campbell also rejected what she described as performative apologies from board members, saying she didn’t forgive them and didn’t think they deserved “peace of mind.” She ended her remarks by reminding the officials that any public discomfort they now faced was nothing compared to how she felt during the original incident.
Meanwhile, Ervin has defended himself by insisting his comment was misunderstood. According to him, calling Campbell “hot” supposedly meant she was “on a roll” during the discussion and had nothing to do with her appearance.
He later argued that viewers only saw a small clip pulled from a much longer meeting and claimed the controversy overshadowed what should have been a positive moment for the student.
For a lot of people watching this Tennessee situation unfold, the bigger issue isn’t just one uncomfortable remark. It’s the fact that a teenager had to stand in front of a room full of adults and demand accountability herself after feeling like the people in charge failed to protect her in the moment.
