Buc-ee’s has built a reputation that’s almost larger than life. Massive stores, spotless bathrooms, endless snacks, and those viral salary boards that make you do a double-take. On paper, it sounds like a dream. But according to one Tennessee man, what happens behind the scenes might tell a very different story.
Enter Dave Headrick, a regular at the Sevierville, Tennessee location who says he used to swing by “every day, every other day.” In other words, this wasn’t some random one-off visitor looking for attention. This was a loyal customer until one morning completely changed his perspective.
While going about a routine stop, Headrick says he witnessed an interaction that didn’t sit right with him. He describes seeing an older employee, someone he estimated to be in his late 60s, quietly doing his job. Then, out of nowhere, a much younger manager allegedly stepped in, confronting him in a way that felt unnecessarily aggressive.
Tennessee Man Is Disturbed By What He Sees At Buc-ees
What stood out wasn’t just the disagreement; it was the tone, the setting, and the fact that it all unfolded publicly. According to Headrick, the manager questioned the worker over something as small as paper towels, escalating it into a tense exchange right in front of customers.
The older employee reportedly tried to explain himself calmly, but the situation didn’t de-escalate. Instead, the manager doubled down, insisting on authority in a way that felt more performative than productive. For Headrick, that was the breaking point.
“I don’t care what you pay your people over here; you don’t treat people like that. That is bull crap,” he said, clearly frustrated by what he had just witnessed. And it didn’t stop there.
Headrick claimed that shortly after, he saw another tense interaction, this time involving a different employee and an issue over brisket. At that point, it wasn’t feeling like an isolated moment anymore. It felt like a pattern.
The Internet Is Proud Of The Man For Speaking Out
For someone who had been a consistent customer, the experience left a lasting impression, but not in a good way. “No respect for your customers, no respect for your employees. You ain’t get my business no more,” he concluded.
Naturally, the internet had thoughts. One viewer backed him up, writing, “Former employee. You’re correct. 8 hour shifts with no breaks… it’s like going to work in a prison.” Another added, “No respect for anyone at all. I can’t support a company who treats their employees like this.” Others applauded him for speaking out, with one comment reading, “I commend you sir for speaking on this topic.”
Of course, it’s important to remember that this is one person’s experience, captured in a limited moment. But stories like this hit a nerve because they tap into something bigger, how employees are treated when no one’s supposed to be watching.
Buc-ee’s may still have its die-hard fans but this Tennessee man’s story is a reminder that even the most beloved brands aren’t immune to criticism.
