Triple-A baseball isn’t supposed to feel like WWE, but Sunday in Tacoma, it came pretty close. Seattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles, currently rehabbing a dislocated left shoulder, was ejected in wild fashion after throwing his bat toward a pitcher who nearly plunked him.
The chaos kicked off in the third inning of Tacoma’s matchup against Las Vegas. Victor Robles, taking just his second at-bat of the game, saw a high-and-tight first pitch from Joey Estes that nearly clipped him on the right shoulder. Already swinging, Robles managed to avoid getting drilled, but frustration clearly boiled over.
According to MLB.com, at first, Robles just dropped his bat. Then, in a moment of pure baseball rage, he picked it back up and flung it in Estes’ direction. Cue the ejection. However, fans online are having a field day with this crazy meltdown. “Glad he didn’t overreact,” wrote one fan on TikTok.
Washington MLB Player Victor Robles Throws His Bat at the Pitcher
Home plate umpire Joe McCarthy wasted no time tossing Robles, who wasn’t done yet. He gestured toward Estes and started making his way toward the mound. He would then be held back by both McCarthy and his own Rainiers teammates. And just like that, his rehab appearance was over. Robles’ replacement, Victor Labrada, stepped in and struck out, but that was just background noise. The real story was Robles’ eruption.
Now, before you write this off as just another hot-headed ballplayer moment, there’s some important context here. Robles has been a magnet for baseballs lately. He’s already been hit by a pitch three times in just five rehab games, including twice on Tuesday. And yes, once by Estes himself. Add in the fact that last September in the Majors, Robles was hit twice in a single game against the A’s (again, one of those from Estes), and you can see how the tension built up. Since the start of 2024, A’s pitchers have drilled Robles four times. That kind of history doesn’t just disappear, and on Sunday, Robles snapped.
But here’s where the story takes a turn. After the dust settled, Robles posted a lengthy apology on Instagram, and it was about as raw and vulnerable as you’ll ever see from a professional athlete.
“I want to take a moment to sincerely apologize for my recent reaction on the field,” Robles wrote. “I let my frustration get the best of me, and I understand how that may have affected not just the game, but the energy and respect we all work so hard to maintain.”
Tension Builds as Victor Robles Attempts To Work Back From Injury
He went on to explain that the past few months have been incredibly difficult, both physically and mentally. The outfielder has been sidelined most of the season with his shoulder injury, and on top of that, he’s dealing with the recent passing of his mother.
“That’s not an excuse,” Robles continued, “but some context I feel you deserve to understand where I’m coming from. Getting hit 5 times in 15 at-bats added to that pressure, and I reacted in a way I’m not proud of.”
It was the kind of message that pulled back the curtain and reminded fans these guys aren’t robots. Baseball is a game of failure, of frustration, and when you add grief and repeated beanballs into the mix, you get combustible moments like Sunday’s.
Robles closed by saying he’s committed to being better “not just as a player, but as a teammate and competitor.” He thanked fans and teammates for their understanding and expressed gratitude just to be back on the field.
So, what’s the verdict here? On one hand, chucking a bat toward a pitcher is about as dangerous as it gets, and Robles absolutely had to be ejected. On the other hand, it’s hard not to empathize with the guy. He’s hurting, he’s frustrated, and he’s been hit more times than anyone would care to count in such a short span.
The Mariners will certainly be hoping this is a one-time blow-up, not a preview of lingering tension when Robles returns to the Majors. But one thing’s for sure: a Triple-A rehab game in mid-August just gave us one of the most dramatic baseball moments of the year.
