In a chilling tale that’s gaining attention online, a Washington State worker is sounding the alarm after a disturbing encounter with their boss that has left them feeling violated and unsure of what to do next.

According to a recent Reddit post titled “My Boss Peeped on Me, What Do I Do?”, the employee shared a deeply personal and unsettling experience involving the Assistant Store Director of the unnamed retail location in Washington. The employee, who remains anonymous for privacy and safety reasons, described an incident that many are calling a clear violation of personal boundaries and possibly even workplace privacy laws.

The Redditor explained that their boss confronted them about being on their phone during a bathroom break. While phone use during work hours can understandably raise concern with some employers, it’s the way in which this information was supposedly obtained that is causing widespread unease.

The employee shared that they always lock the stall door when using the restroom, making it nearly impossible for someone to “catch” them without making an effort to look inside. That’s where things take a troubling turn. The boss admitted to having seen the employee on their phone, something that could only be observed by peering through the narrow gap between the door and the stall frame.

“He didn’t outright say that he did this, but he said that he did, in fact, catch me,” the worker wrote. “Considering I always lock the stall doors, that can only mean he opted to peer through the gap in the stall door.”

Even the employee admits that being on their phone during work hours wasn’t ideal, but they also make a fair point many can relate to: “What else am I gonna do when I’m taking a poop anyway, though?”

What started as a minor infraction now feels like a much more serious issue, one that has left the worker wondering if their privacy was unlawfully invaded. They turned to the Reddit community for advice: “Is there anything I can do? Anything I SHOULD do? This feels like a violation of privacy or SOMETHING.”

The Internet Reacts

“This is absolutely inappropriate behavior on his part, this is clearly against the law, he is breaking peeping tom law and honesty I can’t believe you are as nonchalant about it as you are. I’d report this to your hr department and get them to establish and investigate the behavior. If they fire him or discipline then file a police report as you then have evidence and admission of him doing it,” one person stated.

The post sparked plenty of comments, with many urging the worker to document the incident and consider filing a formal complaint, either with HR or a state labor board. Others pointed out that Washington State, like many others, has laws protecting employees from harassment and inappropriate surveillance in restrooms and other private areas.

For now, the employee is left grappling with the uncomfortable reality of working under someone they no longer trust, raising important questions about boundaries, power dynamics, and personal privacy in the workplace, whether in Washington or elsewhere.
