It looks like the Slayer won’t be returning to television after all. Sarah Michelle Gellar has officially confirmed that the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival has been scrapped, disappointing fans who were eager to return to the world of Sunnydale, California.

For months, buzz had been building around a new series titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale. The project promised a fresh take on the legendary supernatural drama that originally aired from 1997 to 2003. While the show ended over two decades ago, the cultural impact of Buffy Summers and her vampire-hunting adventures has never really faded.

This time around, the story was supposed to introduce a new hero. A young slayer named Nova, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, would step into the spotlight while Gellar’s Buffy returned in a guiding role.

It sounded like the perfect balance of old and new, a way to honor the past while creating something fresh. But after reviewing a pilot directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloe Zhao, Hulu ultimately decided not to continue with the project.

Gellar personally addressed the decision with fans, sharing the update online rather than letting the news leak elsewhere. “So I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me,” she explained. “Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy New Sunnydale.”

The actress went on to thank Zhao for reigniting her connection to the character she once portrayed for six seasons. According to Gellar, it was Zhao’s passion for the series that convinced her to consider stepping back into Buffy’s boots after so many years away.

“I want to thank Chloe Zhao because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots,” she said. Gellar also emphasized that the project helped remind her just how meaningful Buffy still is — both to her and to generations of viewers who grew up watching the show.

“Thanks to Chloe, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me but to all of you,” she shared. Of course, the internet reacted almost instantly once the news spread. Fans who had been excited about the idea of a new Slayer and the possibility of Buffy returning in a mentor role expressed disappointment that the revival won’t be happening.

Here’s What Fans Are Saying

“So the revival got slayed before it even started. Streaming services love resurrecting old shows… until they suddenly remember the budget. Not everything needs a reboot,” one person tweeted. “We got robbed,” said another. “Some legacies are just too iconic to recreate,” a third person chimed in.

Still, the story might not be entirely over. Hulu reportedly remains interested in the Buffy franchise and could explore other projects connected to the universe down the road.

For now though, the planned revival appears to be officially staked. And while that news may sting for fans who loved the Sunnydale, California Scooby gang, Buffy Summers’ legacy as one of television’s most iconic heroes isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
