Before James Van Der Beek‘s untimely passing at 48 after battling stage 3 colorectal cancer in Texas, the actor, forever linked to the angsty teen dreamer of Dawson’s Creek, had quietly been thinking about going back for a revival of the beloved show.

Dawson’s Creek creator Kevin Williamson recently shared with Esquire that while he himself had long felt the show ended exactly how it should have, James Van Der Beek wasn’t quite ready to close that chapter forever. Williamson admitted he’d always been resistant to a reboot, explaining, “We went to the future. The last episode of that show was the remake. So I feel very okay with that.”

From his perspective, the five-year flash-forward finale already offered closure. Case closed. However, Van Der Beek saw possibility. “James and I talked about rebooting Dawson’s Creek several times,” Williamson revealed. “He wanted to do it. And in fact, there was a moment where he was going to write it — and he had a really great idea for it.”

James Van Der Beek Had A Great Idea For Dawson’s Creek Revival

Williamson didn’t hold back his admiration either, saying Van Der Beek “had a beautiful plan.” Life, of course, had other plans. The actor got busy with other projects, schedules shifted, momentum stalled. Like so many ideas in Hollywood, it became one of those “almost” stories.

Then everything changed. Van Der Beek’s death was announced on February 11 in a statement shared via Instagram: “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace.” The message asked for privacy while honoring him as a husband, father, son, brother, and friend.

It’s hard not to feel the weight of that when you look back at his words after he publicly shared his diagnosis in November 2024. At the time, he told People, “I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family.” He added there was “reason for optimism,” and he was “feeling good.”

He even reflected on the deeper meaning of it all, saying, “I thought, ‘This is either going to take me out of the body, or it’s going to teach me how to truly live in it.’”

Van Der Beek Died In February 2026 At His Texas Home

By March 2025, he told Extra he could “see the finish line” of his battle. And in true community fashion, his former castmates planned a reunion event organized by Michelle Williams to benefit him and the nonprofit F Cancer. Sadly, a health setback kept him from attending.

“You can imagine how gutted I was when two stomach viruses conspired to knock me out of commission and keep me grounded at the worst possible moment,” he wrote on Instagram. “Despite every effort … I won’t get to be there.”

For fans who grew up with Dawson’s Creek, the idea that James Van Der Beek wanted to revisit that world feels like one last gift he never got to unwrap. Now, fans mourn his death and send well wishes for his family in Texas as they deal with his tragic passing.
