In a story that’s both infuriating and heartbreaking, a woman from Ohio has gone viral after sharing how she was allegedly fired from her job for being too sick. After giving three years of her life to a small company, she says she was dismissed over the phone with the cold explanation that her “inconsistencies” were “bad for business.” No sit-down. No warning. Just a phone call, and she was out.

The Ohio woman, who remained anonymous in her Reddit post, explained that she had been working full-time at a small business with about 20 employees. Everything seemed relatively manageable until April 2025, when her worsening health forced her to drop down to part-time hours.

She didn’t make this decision lightly. She has been dealing with a slew of serious health issues, including PCOS, severe migraines, and several suspected autoimmune or neurological disorders. Add in mental health conditions like bipolar disorder, OCD, anxiety, and depression, and it’s clear this woman wasn’t just being flaky—she was fighting a serious battle every day just to show up.

In 2024, she took two months off to seek treatment after a mental health crisis that landed her in the ER and an intensive outpatient program. She says she was honest and proactive, always submitting doctor’s notes even when her job didn’t require them. “I never got written up, a warning, probation or anything,” she shared. “I often tried my best to push past the bad days anyway and only called off when it was the worst.”

But once she reduced her hours, everything changed.

Ohio Woman Stunned After Being Fired For Her Health Issues

Suddenly, she says, the friendly environment turned frosty. Her PTO wasn’t fully paid, her employee discount mysteriously shrank, and she began feeling like she was being pushed out. “When I gave push back and brought it up or asked for further accommodations for my worsening health, they pretty much seemed to hate it,” she wrote.

The final straw? She passed out and was found unresponsive by her husband, landing her back in the ER. Since then, she’s barely been able to make it to work, experiencing dizziness, blurry vision, nausea, and fatigue. She’s currently undergoing a battery of tests, including an MRI, CT scan, and heart monitoring. And even with doctors’ notes explaining everything, her employer called her on a Sunday and fired her, just like that.

“I gave them every doctor’s note, told them every medical detail when I didn’t need to,” she said. “I was SO honest about my disabilities and illnesses.” She added, “I feel devastated.”

It’s not hard to see why. Being dismissed with no warning, no sit-down, and no real compassion after three years of dedication feels like a punch to the gut. And while employers in most states, including Ohio, are allowed to fire at-will, they are not allowed to discriminate against someone because of a disability. That includes mental health conditions, chronic illnesses, and the need for medical accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Was what happened legal? That’s a gray area, but it’s definitely worth investigating. If you’ve got doctor’s notes, a track record of communication, and evidence that you were treated differently after disclosing your health issues, you may have a case.

Unfair Treatment Could Lead To Legal Action

One thing’s for sure: the way she was treated isn’t just unfair, it’s inhumane. Chronic illness and disability are already isolating enough. The last thing anyone deserves is to be punished for being sick.

Let this story be a reminder: Know your rights, whether you’re in Ohio or another place. Advocate for yourself. And if you’ve been treated like your health is a burden at work, you’re not alone, and it may be worth fighting back.
