Hollywood has long been seen as the heart of California, but according to Dennis Quaid, it’s not exactly the easiest place to speak freely when it comes to politics.
The veteran actor recently opened up about what it’s like being a vocal supporter of Donald Trump while working in an industry that often leans the opposite direction. And if you ask him, the environment in California’s entertainment world isn’t exactly balanced, per Yahoo.
Quaid didn’t hold back when describing what he sees as a clear divide in Hollywood. In his view, conversations around politics in the industry tend to fall into two extremes. As he put it, “There’s either ‘F Trump’ from the other side or ‘I love Trump’ from the few of us who will speak about it.”
Dennis Quaid Talks California Donald Trump Supporters
That alone paints a pretty stark picture not much middle ground, and not a lot of nuance. But what really stood out was his claim that there’s a different set of rules depending on which side you’re on. “Of course there’s a double standard,” he said, suggesting that openly supporting Trump comes with a different kind of scrutiny compared to other political views in Hollywood.
And honestly, whether you agree or not, that’s been a long-running conversation when it comes to celebrity politics. Despite the potential backlash, Quaid hasn’t exactly kept quiet about where he stands. Over the past couple of years, he’s made multiple public appearances showing support for Trump, including attending a campaign rally during the 2024 election cycle.
He’s also spoken positively about his personal interactions with the former president. During a recent appearance, he described Trump as “surprisingly approachable,” “very funny,” and “really genuine.”
That kind of praise isn’t something you hear often in Hollywood circles which is probably why it gets so much attention when someone does say it out loud. At another event earlier this year, Quaid doubled down even more directly, saying, “I love Donald Trump!” Not exactly subtle.
Being MAGA In Hollywood, California Isn’t Easy
Of course, putting those opinions out there hasn’t come without consequences or at least some side-eye.
After appearing in a video filmed aboard Air Force One, Quaid found himself on the receiving end of some criticism, including from people he’s worked with in the past. Actress Lauren Holly, who starred alongside him in Any Given Sunday, even chimed in publicly with a comment that raised a few eyebrows: “At least I got to slap him real hard in Any Given Sunday.”
“That’s MAGA mentality,” one person commented online. “Hollywood has no standards,” said another. “Quaid will be on wrong side of history,” a third person chimed in. “He figured out he’s a minority in his political affiliation,” a fourth comment read.
Raising Eyebrows With His Opinions
Moments like that kind of highlight exactly what Quaid is talking about the idea that expressing certain views can quickly turn into a public spectacle.
Quaid’s comments tap into something bigger than just one actor’s opinion. California’s entertainment industry has long been associated with a particular political leaning, and when someone steps outside of that, it tends to get noticed.
For some, that’s a sign of imbalance. For others, it’s just the reality of working in a space where personal beliefs often overlap with public personas. Either way, Dennis Quaid seems comfortable being one of the few willing to speak openly about his stance, even if it puts him at odds with others in the industry.
