A wedding dress shop owner in Illinois is being hailed as a hero on the internet after she shared a video of an encounter she had with the mother of a bride to be. When the mother came into the store looking to figure out what she would be wearing to her daughter’s wedding, things quickly got tense and the request the mother of the bride made left social media in shock, as well as the uncomfortable store owner.
It all started with the Chicago, Illinois wedding dress shop owner was preparing to make a TikTok video. Shortly after she began recording, a woman named Barb walked into the store and admitted to being 40 minutes early for her appointment. While the shop owner did her best to stay positive, things took a quick turn when the mother of the bride pulled out a wedding dress of her own and asked that it be altered so that she could wear it to her daughter’s wedding.
The store owner was obviously taken aback. It’s pretty obvious that the mother of the bride should not be wearing a white dress to her daughter’s wedding, let alone an actual wedding dress. When the owner pointed this out, the mother brushed it off, revealing that it would be fine and that the dress would be shortened and altered.
When the mother of the bride pulled out the dress, the shop owner was immediately stunned. “That’s a wedding dress,” she stated. “Well if you cut it off and make it short then it won’t look like a wedding dress,” the mother replied.

The shop owner went on to explain that the woman’s daughter, who is the bride, messaged her and said that her mother’s dress should be in a purple color such as plum or amethyst. The mother continued to share her vision for the wedding dress alteration, and the show owner wasn’t having it.
“But that’s white,” she candidly stated. “I’m trying to be respectful of the bride’s wishes. She sent me criteria.” When the mother continued to insist that the dress wouldn’t look like a wedding dress once it was changed, the shop owner tried to get through to her.
“Have you thought this through?” she asked. “How’s she’s going to react?” The mother went on to say, “It’s fine she won’t mind,” which garned a laugh from the shop owner. “You’re daughter has spent hundreds, now thousands of dollars in my store. I have a responsibility to her,” the dress store owner added.
“So my money is no good here?” Barb asked. The shop owner kept her composure and told her that her money was good in her shop, and that she’d be happy to help her find an appropriate dress. That’s when things got heated. Barb knocked over a cup of pens in anger, and the shop owner immediately told her their interaction was over. She also promised to call the bride and tell her what had happened.
“I’m shaken up by this. I can’t imagine doing this to your daughter,” she finally said. “This is diabolique.”
TikTok Was Shocked By The Mother’s Carlessness
Of course, TikTok applauded the Illinois shop owner for putting her foot down, and reprimanded the mother of the bride for her terrible behavior.
“The bride has those criteria because she knew exactly what her mum would do,” one person commented.
“She came early because the daughter was going to come to the appointment and mom knew she wouldn’t agree to her idea. This woman has been in competition with her daughter her whole life,” another theorized.
“Thank you for standing your ground and advocating for the bride,” a third comment read.
This Illinois dress shop owner may have saved the bride’s wedding day with her unwavering behavior. Now it seems that the bride has bigger fish to fry, like why her mother is trying to steal the thunder from her on her special day.
