Gilbert Arenas Interview

Gilbert Arenas may have gone from Agent Zero to Agent Casino Boss, but not in a good way. The former NBA All-Star is in serious hot water after federal authorities charged him and seven others in connection with an alleged high-end, illegal poker ring that operated out of a luxury rental in California’s San Fernando Valley. According to court documents, the operation ran from September 12, 2021, to July 20, 2022, and wasn’t your typical friendly Friday night poker hangout.

Authorities claim Gilbert Arenas would rent a home on Gable Drive in the upscale Encino neighborhood specifically to host these games. And while casual poker nights aren’t necessarily illegal, this setup crossed the legal line fast. California prosecutors allege the organizers collected a “rake,” a fee taken from each pot, either as a percentage or a flat rate. That little house cut is what makes it a criminal offense.

But it wasn’t just about chips and cards. This wasn’t some dimly lit man cave with a folding table and a bowl of stale pretzels. Nope, these games had their own poker felt proudly stamped with “ARENAS POKER CLUB” and even featured a graphic of Arenas in his iconic Wizards jersey, No. 0 and all. That branding doesn’t exactly scream low-key operation. Some social media users have shared their thoughts on the situation.

Gilbert Arenas Arrested For Illegal Gambling Operation

Gilbert Arenas, who starred in the NBA for 11 seasons, most famously for the Washington Wizards, was once one of the league’s top scorers. From 2004 to 2007, he was dropping over 25 points a game and was a force to be reckoned with. But for many, his name is just as tied to the infamous 2009 locker room gun incident with teammate Javaris Crittenton. And now? It might be associated with full-blown underground casino vibes.

The charges, announced Wednesday, named Arenas along with Yevgeni “Giora” Gersham, Evgenni “Eugene” Tourevski, Allan “Elicia” Austria, Yarin “YC” Cohen, Arthur Kats, Ievgen Krachun, and Valentina Cojocari. All but Cojocari were charged with conspiracy and conducting illegal gambling. Arenas is also accused of making false statements to investigators, never a great addition to your resume. And it gets even messier.

According to the indictment, Gersham and Cojocari were allegedly involved in a fake marriage to dodge U.S. immigration laws. They’re also accused of visa fraud and lying on immigration paperwork. So yeah, poker wasn’t the only game being played.

How Deep Does This Operation Go?

If you’re wondering how fancy this operation got, just picture this: dozens of players, chefs, valets, armed security, and women hired to serve drinks, give massages, and keep the players company. Gersham reportedly hired these women. The, along with Tourevski, Austria, and Cohen, charged them a “tax,” a cut of their tips for working the games.

At a single poker night on July 19-20, 2022, prosecutors said there were about 26 players and more than a dozen staff working the event. That’s more of a casino floor than a chill night in. The defendants were arrested without incident by agents from the LAPD, Homeland Security Investigations, and the IRS. That should tell you just how big the feds think this thing was.

So what’s next for Gilbert Arenas? For now, he’s set to make a first appearance in court, alongside the rest of the crew. And while some fans still remember him for his clutch shooting and fearless style. This latest chapter might be the most bizarre yet. From NBA stardom to underground poker boss? Only in Hollywood… or, well, Encino.
