David Bowie daughter, Lexi Jones, grew up in a world most people only see on magazine covers. Raised in a celebrated household anchored in their New York family home, she was surrounded by art, music, fashion, and global fame. To the outside world, it looked like an extraordinary childhood.

But behind the privacy of that home, Lexi says she was fighting battles no one could see. And one decision made during her early teens would pull her out of that life overnight. Separating her not only from her surroundings but also from her father during the final chapter of his life. What happened next, she says, changed everything.
Now 25, Lexi has begun opening up about what it was like growing up as the daughter of David Bowie and supermodel Iman. While her parents were icons in their respective fields, she says she often felt like she existed more as an idea than as a person, according to the Daily Mail.
Lexi Jones Booted From Dad David Bowie’s New York Home Before His Death
From a young age, anxiety crept in. Teachers noticed shifts in her behavior. Therapy began before she was even 10. By 11, she says she had started harming herself. At 12, she developed bulimia. Learning challenges made school feel overwhelming, and depression settled heavily over her adolescence.
When Bowie was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2014, Lexi describes hitting an emotional breaking point. While other teens experimented socially, she says she turned to alcohol and drugs as a way to escape rather than to have fun. The coping mechanisms quickly spiraled. Her family intervened. A moment she remembers vividly.
Lexi recalls her father reading from a letter before she was sent away. The only line she clearly remembers: “I’m sorry we have to do this.”
Life Changing Moment
Shortly afterward, she says two men entered the home and told her she could cooperate or resist. She chose to fight. Lexi screamed and clung to furniture, but ultimately says she was physically escorted out and placed into a waiting SUV, unsure of where she was headed.
She was transported to a wilderness therapy program, where she spent 91 days living outdoors in winter conditions. Participants dug holes for bathrooms, counted aloud while using them, built fires for warmth, and slept under tarps. Privacy was scarce. Contact with home was limited.
Wilderness therapy programs have faced mounting criticism in recent years. Public figures such as Paris Hilton have alleged mistreatment in similar facilities and pushed for greater oversight. After three months, Lexi says she was sent to a residential treatment center in Utah for more than a year, where monitoring and restrictions continued.
While in treatment, Lexi learned that her father had died in January 2016 at age 69, just days after releasing his final album, Blackstar. She had spoken to him just two days earlier. When reports stated he passed away surrounded by family, she says that detail left her heartbroken.
She said she saw a post online announcing that her father had “passed away surrounded by his whole family.”
“It made me physically ill because, yeah, the whole family was there except for me. I’ve accepted it. I’ve tried not to internalize it or feel guilty, but sometimes I still have those moments where I wish things were to be different,” Jones shared.
Losing Her Father From Afar
Grieving, she explains, became structured within the program. It is categorized into phases with expectations and monitored progress. At the time, she accepted it as normal. Looking back, she sees it differently.
Lexi eventually returned home, though she says being sent away more than once left her feeling displaced and misunderstood. Today, she describes herself as emotionally introspective and self-aware, but acknowledges lingering effects. Particularly in situations that feel overly controlled.
In 2025, she released her debut album, Xandri, writing and producing the project independently. It marked a powerful step in defining herself outside of her father’s legacy. By sharing her story publicly, Lexi Jones is shedding light on the hidden side of growing up in a famous family.
“It’s sad to hear she’s struggled so much,” one commenter writes.
“Her dad was trying to save her life while he was losing his,” another adds.
“It’s really sad that she was not able to be there when he passed away. Really sad,” one more admits.
The mental health struggles, the controversial treatment programs, and the complicated grief of losing a parent from afar. Behind one of music’s most legendary names is a daughter who says she is still healing and finally telling her story on her own terms.
