Most engagement stories involve candlelit dinners, tears, and perfectly staged photos. Sadly, this one out of California involved a golf ball flying through a windshield crack and smacking a woman directly in the face. Honestly, it sounds less like a romance movie and more like a deleted scene from a sports comedy.
But somehow, a California couple still managed to turn total chaos into one of the internet’s favorite engagement stories. Jessica Blakeslee recently went viral after her sister, Josie Blakeslee, shared clips from the unforgettable day on TikTok. The video showed Jessica rocking a pretty gnarly black eye just hours before getting engaged to her boyfriend, Mark Michael.
Josie summed up the disaster perfectly with the caption: “An engagement story FORE the books.”The whole thing unfolded during a golf outing at Pacific Grove Golf Links on May 9. Jessica, Mark, and family members were out enjoying the course when one bad swing changed the entire vibe of the day.
California Woman Takes Golf Ball To The Face Before Wedding Proposal
According to Jessica, the golf ball somehow flew through a tiny opening in the golf cart windshield before drilling her in the face while she stood nearby.“Unfortunately, it nailed me right in the face,” she explained. “Honestly, the odds of it happening that way were about one in a million.”
Based on the photos, the damage looked rough. Still, Jessica apparently handled the whole thing far better than most people would. Instead of spiraling over bruising, makeup, and ruined engagement photos, she basically shrugged it off and kept moving. “While it was painful, I was not about to let it derail the day,” she said, per PEOPLE.
That mindset became important because Mark had secretly planned an elaborate proposal involving both families, relatives traveling in from different places, a photographer, and a meaningful location tied to their relationship. So after the golf accident, everyone reportedly gathered behind the scenes trying to decide whether they should cancel the proposal entirely.
TikTok commenters later argued they would’ve absolutely postponed it. Plenty admitted they would be furious about getting proposed to while sporting a swollen face and fresh bruises. But Jessica’s family knew her personality well enough to realize she’d probably laugh about it instead of melting down.
According to Josie, Jessica is exactly the type of person who could make a black eye somehow become part of the memory instead of letting it ruin the moment. Later that evening, the family headed to The Lodge at Pebble Beach, where Josie attempted to work some makeup magic before the proposal.
What a memory
Jessica admitted she already suspected something romantic might be coming because both families were suddenly together in one place. Still, she wasn’t about to let the injury steal her excitement. Things became emotional when Mark suggested taking a walk near the ocean along Pebble Beach’s famous 18th hole. The proposal eventually happened at Stillwater Cove Pier, which apparently held major significance in their relationship.
“Stillwater Cove Pier is especially special to us because it is the very spot where we first said I love you to each other,” Jessica shared. That’s when Mark got down on one knee and everything else completely disappeared from her mind.
“The moment Mark got down on one knee, I completely forgot about my face,” she explained. “I was so overwhelmed with happiness and the enormity of the moment that my appearance was genuinely the last thing on my mind.”
The newly engaged couple later celebrated with dinner and dancing at Dametra Cafe surrounded by family. Looking back, Jessica says she wouldn’t change a thing about the bizarre day, bruises included. “A black eye heals, but a moment like that, with both our families together, at the exact spot where we first said I love you, that is not something you reschedule,” she said.
“Why are people so obsessed with everything being perfect? life isn’t perfect and this will be something to remember,” one person commented. “I think it’s romantic to be proposed to no matter the circumstances. Love prevails and marriage isn’t about making everything perfect or a performance,” said another.
Honestly, the California woman has a point. Perfect engagement photos are everywhere. But getting accidentally hit by a golf ball hours before a proposal and still ending the night engaged? That’s a story people actually remember.
