The pup has been disappearing and returning home with bones that have been determined to be human remains. The dog belongs to Paulina Mejía, who lives in Center Point, Alabama, and whose German Shepherd mix, Chicarin, has become the unlikely star of a very grim mystery.
It all started in August 2024 when the family’s dogs were caught literally playing with a human skull near Mejía’s Alabama property. The skull wasn’t just any skull. An autopsy revealed a gunshot wound. DNA testing didn’t bring up a match in any national database, so the victim’s identity was a total blank, per People.
Just when things couldn’t get stranger, a few months later in December, Chicarin delivered yet another chilling gift, a human tibia. Forensics confirmed it came from the same person as the skull. At this point, the dog wasn’t just being mischievous, he was practically doing detective work.
Alabama Family Dog Drags Home Human Remains
By April 2025, the macabre deliveries continued with a femur, and authorities even managed to recover a mandible from the nearby woods during one of their searches. Again, all from the same individual. Fast forward to August 9, 2025, and Chicarin was back at it, this time carrying a long bone into the yard like it was a prized stick. Deputies swarmed the woods for another sweep, uncovering additional remains that are now being tested to see if they also connect to this single mystery victim.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the earlier discoveries all belong to one man. In March, the Coroner’s Office revealed the remains were those of a Black male, but beyond that, his identity remains a complete mystery.
No missing persons, no matching DNA, nothing that connects this victim to someone’s loved one still out there searching for answers. It’s as though this man’s story simply vanished until Chicarin started dragging it back into the light.
Chicarin Is A Hero
On one hand, it’s horrifying. On the other, it’s weirdly fascinating how a regular Alabama family’s pet dog has become a key player in a homicide investigation. Chicarin might have stumbled onto the single most important piece of evidence in an unsolved killing. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill animal story. This is darker, stranger, and could one day unlock the truth behind an unidentified man’s death.
“This isn’t rocket science. Put a camera and GPS tracker on the dog’s collar. No wonder crimes go unsolved,” one person commented online. “A tracking tag should have been put on the dogs after the first find! Why did that not happen?” another frankly stated.
As of now, investigators are still combing through evidence, hoping the next discovery leads them closer to solving this chilling case. And while Chicarin may not understand the gravity of his finds, one thing is clear, the Alabama dog refuses to let the mystery stay buried.
