What was meant to be a relaxing hiking getaway near Glacier National Park quickly turned into a tense and unsettling experience for a group of five women vacationing in Montana. The “updated farmhouse” they booked through VRBO appeared perfect online, but the reality inside was far from welcoming.

The women immediately noticed handwritten signs posted throughout the home, detailing rules they had never been informed about. According to her post on Reddit, the notices were left all throughout the home. One stated that shoes were forbidden inside.

While another, more chilling note warned that lights were not to be left on at night or when the house was empty. The note strangely cautioned that this was due to “old wiring can get too hot and cause a fire.” For the group, the unusual rules set off early alarms about the property’s safety. But it wasn’t long before something more intangible made them uneasy.

The Montana farmhouse’s interior only heightened the sense of dread. The bathroom was at the bottom of a steep, narrow stairway, and the bedrooms sat upstairs. The air was heavy with incense, creating an almost otherworldly atmosphere. Then the women saw something that terrified them. A dark silhouette behind a stained glass door, locked from the outside.

When the group bravely ventured outside to investigate. Next, they discovered a back entry with another lock from the outside. This made it impossible to know if someone had been inside. Or if they still were. By this point, fear had taken hold. Despite just unloading their luggage, the group quickly decided they could not stay and fled the Montana rental.

After leaving, the women reached out to the Montana property owner. Initially, she denied that anyone had been in the house. However, during their conversation with the owner accidentally or intentionally revealed knowledge of their movements. This includes details of them using the bathroom and lying on one of the beds. Needless to say, this vacation nightmare’s interactions left the group feeling watched and unnerved.

They admitted to losing the money they had paid for the rental. They booked another property, eager to put distance between themselves and the eerie farmhouse. “We did not get any help from VRBO and their customer service was a nightmare,” she wrote. “The place was seriously creepy! None of us are the timid type. 5 very strong, independent type women and we ALL wanted to get the hell out of there.“

Their experience raises unsettling questions about rental safety and oversight.
