In a scene that sounds straight out of a dramatic movie or an overly intense driver’s ed PSA, a Wisconsin driver recently crashed his car into a tree and then decided to flee the scene despite obvious injuries.

According to reports, the accident occurred when the Wisconsin man swerved to avoid another vehicle, ultimately slamming the driver’s side of his car straight into a tree. While that might’ve been enough to knock most people off their feet or at least prompt a call to 911. However, this driver had other priorities. Covered in blood and clearly shaken, he got back behind the wheel and drove off as if it were just another Tuesday.

Meanwhile, this wasn’t a hit-and-run that would go unnoticed. A motorcyclist who witnessed the whole thing decided to go full vigilante and chased the man down, eventually catching up to him and calling emergency services. Once pulled over, the driver uttered, “I am okay,” a bold statement for someone who looked like they had just walked off the set of a Fast & Furious crash scene.

The most bizarre part was that the driver seemed more concerned with something else entirely. “I have to [go], or I will lose my life forever,” he reportedly told the motorcyclist. “I will lose my kids.” The cryptic statement has led many to speculate that the man might be involved in a custody battle or other legal issues where a traffic incident involving police would severely impact his case. Honestly, it’s hard not to empathize with the desperation, but the execution was not the best.

Despite the dramatic escape attempt, the law caught up with him. He was mailed five different tickets totaling over $1,700. His laundry list of infractions included: Hit and run to property adjacent to a highway, Failure to keep a vehicle under control, Operating a vehicle without insurance, Driving a non-registered car, and Failing to stop at a stop sign.

Miraculously, he was not charged with DUI, which surprised many who assumed intoxication had to be involved. But according to WXOW 19, that wasn’t the case.

This Is So Scary

Even stranger, the man later told authorities that he “did not remember what he hit.” Whatever it was, memory loss after an impact like that isn’t unheard of. But still, if your face is bleeding and your windshield looks like it got into a fight with a tree (and lost), it’s probably best not to flee the scene and hope no one notices.

While the fines are nothing to scoff at, many online felt he got off relatively easily considering how dangerous the situation could have been. The Wisconsin man is lucky no one else got hurt, and even luckier that his injuries weren’t more severe.
