Will Smith has never shied away from the spotlight. Whether he’s dropping blockbuster hits or dropping jaws (yes, we all remember that Oscars moment). But now, the Fresh Prince star is pulling back the curtain on a very different kind of drama: the messiness of parenting. And spoiler alert, even one of the most famous dads in the world says he got it wrong.

In a recent interview on Heart Breakfast with Jamie and Amanda, Will got refreshingly honest about raising his two youngest kids, Willow and Jaden Smith, alongside wife Jada Pinkett-Smith. While the couple has always seemed to embrace a free-spirited, open-minded parenting style, Will says their approach backfired in a big way (via BET).

“We made a very, very, very terrible mistake with our children, and we went with radical honesty,” Will admitted. “But don’t do it, I’m not advocating for it.”

At first glance, the idea of radical honesty sounds like a dream. A house where truth reigns supreme? No lies, no punishments, just open conversations. Sounds peaceful, right? Not exactly.

“The only way you can get in trouble in this house is if we find out you did something and you don’t tell the truth,” Will explained.

Seems fair. But things got a little too real when Willow and Jaden actually started using that freedom. Instead of sneaking around or sugarcoating questionable decisions like most teens, the Smith kids got bold and blunt.

“They do whatever they want and then just come tell you,” Will said. “It’s awful. Don’t try it. You want your kids to lie, definitely. You don’t want to know some of the stuff your kids are thinking of doing.”

Yikes. It’s one of those parenting ideas that probably sounded great in theory but unraveled fast in real life. Let’s be honest, most parents aren’t ready to hear everything their kids are planning, thinking, or experimenting with. And when those kids are growing up in front of the entire world? The stakes get even higher.

Willow and Jaden have certainly carved out their own unique paths. Willow’s fearless creativity has helped her stand apart in the music industry, while her edgy fashion and thoughtful perspectives have landed her a seat at her mom’s famous Red Table Talk. Jaden, on the other hand, has dabbled in acting, music, and fashion, always pushing boundaries and promoting individuality.

They’re both unapologetically themselves, and for that, Will and Jada clearly deserve some credit. But even Will knows that parenting is far from a perfect science. The whole “let your kids be radically honest and deal with zero consequences” experiment? Yeah, that one’s not getting a glowing Yelp review from him.

In the end, Will Smith’s parenting confession is a rare moment of humility from a celebrity dad who’s spent decades in the spotlight. It’s also a reminder that no matter how much fame or fortune you have, raising kids is always a little messy, sometimes uncomfortable, and often filled with regrets.
