‘Whimsical’ Virginia Mom Holds ‘Lice Funeral’ After Kids’ Nasty Infestation: ‘One Of My Biggest Fears’

There are certain parenting milestones you brace yourself for. Things such as their first broken bone, first heartbreak, and first call from the principal. But for one mom in Virginia, the unexpected rite of passage came in the form of something much itchier.

When Laney Morello discovered that three of her daughters had come home from school with head lice, she says it was “one of my biggest fears.” The Virginia mom of four had never dealt with lice before, so this was uncharted territory, per PEOPLE. She had to sit her girls down and explain what needed to happen next, namely, that the tiny intruders would need to be removed and, yes, eliminated.

That’s when things took a turn no one saw coming. Morello’s 5-year-old daughter, Frankie, lovingly refers to herself as a “bug keeper.” She has a soft spot for critters of all kinds. So when she learned that treating the lice meant killing them, she was heartbroken.

According to Morello, “She cares a lot about little critters and was so sad when she found out that by evicting the lice we’d also be killing them.” Frankie’s older sisters proposed an idea that feels straight out of a quirky indie film: hold a funeral for the lice. Not kidding. A full-on sendoff to honor the bugs before they were banished for good.

Morello later shared footage of the now-viral moment on TikTok, showing her kids crafting tiny headstones that read, “RIP. Here lie the lice.” The family gathered outside, dressed in what she described as their “funeral best,” and even set the mood with Taylor Swift’s song “My Tears Ricochet.” Parenting in 2026 is truly unmatched.

Reflecting on the experience, Morello joked, “Filing ‘lice funeral’ under: things I never would have done before becoming a parent.” But beneath the humor was something genuinely thoughtful. She and her husband have always aimed to give their kids a childhood full of joy and creativity.

“Their dad and I decided before having kids that we wanted them to have the most fun, love-filled and memorable childhood, so we’re usually pretty happy to act on their funny ideas.” And apparently, the internet approved. Morello says she received a flood of advice and solidarity from other parents.

TikTok Found It Hilarious

“I just realized I’m not being whimsical enough as a parent,” one person commented on the video. “The cloak and everything. Finally someone understands peak funeral attire,” joked another. “The fact that you guys did it speaks volumes you are great parents!” a third person chimed in. “Top-tier parenting,” a fourth comment read.

Beyond the whimsy, there was a deeper reason behind the theatrics. “The funeral was a fun way to make something fun and silly out of a nuisance of a situation. So many people mentioned that they were traumatized by their lice experience as kids, and we didn’t want that for our kids.” By leaning into the absurdity, they turned what could’ve been a stressful memory into a story their daughters will likely tell for years.

For anyone unfamiliar with how lice spread, health experts note that head lice don’t fly or jump, they crawl quickly through hair and are most commonly transmitted through direct head-to-head contact. Sharing items like brushes, hats, towels, or pillows can also spread them. Pets, thankfully, are not part of the equation.

What To Know About Lice Infestations

Signs of an infestation typically include persistent scalp itching, especially along the hairline, behind the ears, and at the back of the neck. Nits (lice eggs) cling tightly to individual hairs and shouldn’t be confused with dandruff or product buildup, which can be flicked away easily.

Treatment generally involves over-the-counter or prescription lice-killing products, along with careful combing and cleaning of personal items. And if there’s ever uncertainty, doctors recommend consulting a healthcare provider.

Meanwhile, this Virginia family seemed to get through the lice infestation and create a lifelong memory that they’re sure to laugh about for years to come.
