Going to the dentist is stressful enough; you’ve got the drills, the waiting room anxiety, and the faint smell of fluoride in the air. But for one South Carolina woman, her latest dental appointment turned out to be a whole different kind of uncomfortable. Instead of a routine cleaning, she ended up getting an unexpected sermon from a pushy stranger who decided the waiting room was the perfect place to spread the word of God.

The bizarre encounter was shared on TikTok by @CarmenKlepper, racking up over 100,000 views and 11,000 likes. The short clip captures a real-life awkward encounter you just can’t escape. In the video, Carmen films herself sitting in the waiting area of a South Carolina dentist’s office, trying to keep her cool as an older woman nearby launches into a full-on religious monologue.

It starts off as simple background chatter, talking about God, Satan, and salvation but quickly becomes very clear that this older woman isn’t just making small talk. She turns her attention directly to Carmen and asks, “Do you want to talk about God, or do you want him out of the way?” Carmen, politely but firmly, replies that she’d rather not. But that doesn’t stop her chatty neighbor one bit.

Getting preached to in the dentist lobby Edit: IT WAS A CUSTOMER NOT ANYONE WHO WORKED THERE, and after the dentist found out they dismissed her 🙂 10/10 dentistry

The woman keeps going, seemingly unfazed by the fact that no one else in the room signed up for a Bible study session. She begins preaching about good and evil, even saying she feels “sad” for Carmen. Through it all, Carmen stays calm and polite, offering the occasional nod and awkward smile, the kind of response we’ve all given when stuck in a conversation we desperately want to end but can’t figure out how.

Things take an even stranger turn when the older woman tells her, “If you only knew where you were going,” implying Carmen’s spiritual future might not be so bright. She then doubles down with the line, “Satan is real,” prompting Carmen to give a nervous laugh probably the only sane reaction to an unsolicited warning about eternal damnation while waiting to get your teeth cleaned. The Christian also claimed that “Satan rules the world.”

Thankfully, the encounter came to an end when a staff member finally called Carmen’s name for her appointment. As she stood up and escaped the waiting room sermon, viewers could practically feel her relief through the screen.

TikTok Isn’t Happy

Commenters were quick to sympathize, with many joking that this was a new level of dental anxiety and others pointing out how inappropriate it was to ambush someone with religion in a medical setting.

“I’ve never had an atheist come to my door or proselytize at the dentist’s office,” one person said in the comment section. “I’ve never had an atheist come to my door or proselytize at the dentist’s office,” another joked. “I am NOT KIND when people preach at me against my will,” a third person wrote.

While it’s unclear what inspired the older woman’s sudden need to preach, one thing’s certain next time, this South Carolina TikToker might be finding a new dentist’s office. Or at least bringing headphones to block out any future pop-up sermons in the waiting room.
