The Cleveland Cavaliers and restricted free-agent guard Collin Sexton still have not come to an agreement on a new contract for the young player as we get closer and closer to the start of the NBA’s preseason.

Sexton is a Rich Pual partner and it is not unusual for Paul and Kulch Sports to take these negotiations close to training camp or even into training camp as the Cavaliers saw with Triston Thompson back in 2015 before he got his new deal. Sexton has not had much of a market in his first free agency experience and he was very unhappy with the Cavaliers’ first offer to him.

Every day that goes by that Sexton is still not with the Cavaliers is another day that it becomes more seemingly obvious that he will end up on a one-year qualifying offer with the Cavaliers. This could actually be a good move for both parties as the Cavaliers do not lose a valuable asset and Collin Sexton gets another shot at proving that he is a top young player in today’s NBA.

What happened to Sexton?

Sexton only played 11 games for the Cavaliers last season as he went down with a knee injury and spent the rest of the season in rehab trying to get back into basketball shape.

It seems that the Cleveland Cavaliers are also exploring a sign and trade option for Collin Sexton with the Utah Jazz who have been interested in Sexton for a while now. It is not certain what the Cavaliers would want in return for Sexton from Utah as they have already pulled out of the Donovan Mitchell race.

It seems that Caris LeVert has the two-guard starting spot to lose as he has the size and skill to be a threat on both ends of the court. That is something that the Cavaliers have been looking for as having Sexton and Garland in the backcourt at the same time is a liability on the defensive end.

What will Cleveland do?

It will be very interesting to see what the Cleveland Cavaliers will do with Collin Sexton as he could be a key part of their young core if he would be able to come off the bench as a sixth-man. But for right now we will just have to wait and see what happens as training camp continues to get closer. Sexton has done great things for The Land and the fans love him, so hopeful the two parties can figure out some kind of deal that makes everyone happy.
