If you’re squeamish, you might want to skip Atlanta, Georgia, for your next layover. Chaos and a whole lot of gagging erupted at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. It seems sewage water suddenly began exploding from a ceiling panel in the terminal.

The mess went down in Georgia on Monday and was caught on video by traveler Jamaal Carlos Jr., who happened to be waiting for his delayed flight to Dallas, Texas. Many passengers were already annoyed about the delay. But things went from bad to worse when brown murky water started gushing down. Within seconds, ceiling tiles gave out and debris rained down like the airport’s very own horror movie set.

In true travel nightmare fashion, the stench reportedly hit hard. Several people were seen covering their faces, trying to block out the smell. According to Carlos, the water flowed for about 10–15 seconds—long enough to drench the floor and everyone’s patience. And get this, people were still walking through the mess for several minutes before the area was finally cordoned off.

Even after crews arrived, the damage was done. According to Atlanta-Live News, the airport scrambled to reroute passengers, and the Lower North Checkpoint was temporarily closed. Still, Carlos said the odor was so strong it lingered two or three gates away.

Atlanta Airport Officials Claim It’s Fine, Travelers Say Otherwise

While airport officials claim the mess was contained and didn’t impact overall operations, travelers on the ground clearly felt otherwise. Emergency crews were dispatched (smart move), and reps were seen working hard to redirect foot traffic while remediation teams mopped up what everyone’s just hoping was dirty water and not something worse, the Daily Mail adds. As you may imagine, the comment section left little to the imagination.

“What a 💩 show!’ one commenter writes.

“I wonder if any of it hit the fan,” laughs another.

“Code Brown! Clean Up In Ailse 11,” snips another.

Officials say they’re still investigating the source of the leak, but in the meantime, it’s safe to say the experience left a lasting impression. Especially for those who were a little too close to the splash zone. This unsettling incident at one of the busiest airports in the world raises serious concerns about infrastructure maintenance and passenger safety.

While airport officials insist the situation is under control, travelers exposed to falling debris and possibly hazardous water would likely disagree. As investigations continue, many are left wondering. If this can happen in a major U.S. airport, what else is being overlooked behind the scenes?
