Trae Young’s time in Atlanta, Georgia, is officially over, and the way it all went down feels as dramatic as anything you would expect from today’s NBA. On Wednesday, during an actual Hawks home game, Atlanta pulled the trigger on a blockbuster deal that “Shipped off” as X users would describe it’s longtime franchise face to the Washington Wizards. According to Yahoo Sports, the Hawks traded Young in exchange for C.J. McCollum and Corey Kispert, with no draft picks changing hands. Yes, you read that right. An All-Star guard in his prime was moved without a single draft pick attached.

The timing alone made the moment surreal. The trade was executed while Trae Young was sitting on the Hawks bench in street clothes. After getting some last-second well wishes from teammates, he reportedly exited the court quickly, closing the chapter on an eight-season run that defined the franchise for nearly a decade. Young had spent his entire NBA career in Atlanta, Georgia, and now, just like that, he is gone.

Trae Young’s Time in Atlanta Georgia Is Up

This move did not come completely out of nowhere. Two days earlier, the source reported that the Wizards were looming as a top destination for Trae Young. Behind the scenes, Young and his agents worked with the Hawks on the trade, signaling that both sides understood the relationship had run its course.

Still, the deal itself raised eyebrows across the league. As one blunt assessment put it, without context, this is an odd deal. Trae Young led the NBA in assists per game last season, yet Atlanta essentially salary-dumped him for two players whose main value was making the trade work financially. As the commentary around the league noted, “An actual NBA All-Star in his 20s requested a trade to the Wizards.” That alone says a lot about where things stood in Atlanta, Georgia.

Injuries certainly played a role in how this season unfolded. After appearing in the first five games of the 2025–26 campaign, Young missed the next 23 games with an MCL sprain. During that stretch, the Hawks went 13–10 without him, which quietly fueled questions about his long-term fit. When he returned in mid-December, Young put up eight points and 10 assists in his first game back, but his momentum stalled again after missing several games this month with a right quad contusion.

From Atlanta’s perspective, the trade clears the way for a younger core. The Hawks can now focus on building around Jalen Johnson, Dyson Daniels, Onyeka Okongwu, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker, all of whom are signed through at least the 2027–28 season. It is a clear signal that the franchise is turning the page.

What’s Next For Trae Young?

Money also loomed large in this decision. Young was not extended this offseason, despite being eligible for a four-year extension. He is currently in the fourth year of a five-year, $215 million deal, earning $46 million this season with a player option worth $49 million next year. Atlanta’s hesitation to commit long-term spoke volumes.

The results on the court did not help. The Hawks last made the playoffs in 2023, when they lost in the first round to the Boston Celtics. Outside of a fluky Eastern Conference finals run in 2021, Trae Young’s offensive brilliance never translated into sustained postseason success. As critics have pointed out, while few players combine scoring and facilitating like Young, his limitations have only become more evident with time.

Now the spotlight shifts to Washington. The Wizards have a new star in Trae Young. Can they succeed where the Hawks didn’t? That question will define the next phase of his career. For Atlanta, Georgia, the breakup may feel overdue. For Trae Young, it is a fresh start. And for the rest of us watching, it is another reminder that in the modern NBA, even franchise players are never truly untouchable.
