For most people, medical records fall into the category of information that’s nobody else’s business. That’s why one Michigan woman says she was completely blindsided when she discovered that deeply personal details about her prescriptions had somehow ended up in the hands of the very person she least wanted to have them: her ex.
According to a post she shared online, the Michigan woman is currently involved in a contentious custody dispute. Earlier this year, she relocated to another town in an effort to create some distance and start fresh. Since moving, she had been using a local independent pharmacy to fill her prescriptions.
Everything seemed normal until her attorney received a new filing from her ex. Buried within the court documents was something she never expected to see. The woman says via Reddit that her ex attached a complete printout of her prescription history from the pharmacy she had been using.

According to her account, the records included details about medications she had been prescribed over the previous three months, including treatments for anxiety and insomnia. To make matters worse, she claims the information was being used as part of an argument that she was somehow unfit to care for their child.
The discovery left her scrambling for answers. According to the post, she never signed any paperwork authorizing her ex to receive the information and never provided consent for the Michigan pharmacy to release it.
When she contacted the business to find out what happened, she says the explanation was almost unbelievable. The head pharmacist allegedly investigated the matter and discovered that a pharmacy technician had provided the records directly to her ex. According to the woman’s account, he reportedly told staff that the two were still living together and claimed he needed the information for tax purposes.
Just like that, private medical information allegedly changed hands. What makes the story particularly unsettling is that it happened during an active custody dispute, where every piece of information can potentially become part of a larger legal strategy.
The Michigan mother explained that her family attorney is already addressing the custody issues themselves, but she wanted to know what options might exist for holding the pharmacy responsible for the alleged privacy breach.
