What was supposed to be the start of a fresh chapter for one mom has turned into a heartbreaking story that’s now raising serious questions. Rachel Tussey, a 47-year-old Ohio mother with more than 25,000 followers on TikTok, had been openly documenting what she called a “midlife glow-up.”
Like many people navigating midlife changes, Tussey shared pieces of her journey online, including her decision to undergo a tummy tuck procedure. In the days leading up to the surgery, the Ohio mother seemed hopeful and optimistic about the transformation ahead. Sitting in a hospital bed wearing a gown, she addressed her followers with a mix of excitement and faith, per PEOPLE.
“Please pray. I know it’s gonna be great. I’ve waited a really long time for this,” she said in a video before the procedure. “I’m in good hands, I know God’s got my back. Let’s do this.”
Ohio Mother Dies After Tummy Tuck
Her post carried hashtags like #midlifeglowup and #mommymakeover, reflecting a trend that has become increasingly popular online. Across social media many women openly discuss cosmetic procedures as part of reclaiming confidence after years of raising kids, working, and putting themselves last.
But according to her husband, Jeremy Tussey, the day of the surgery quickly took a devastating turn. In a TikTok update shared on March 3, Jeremy explained that he had been waiting for his wife to finish the procedure when he received a call around 5:45 p.m. telling him to return to the recovery room. As he arrived, he says Rachel’s doctor was on his way out and reassured him that everything had gone well.
Jeremy recalled being told that the surgery “went great.” But inside the recovery room, the situation allegedly looked very different. He said Rachel called out for him as he entered, and shortly after, a nurse asked her how she was feeling after being given pain medication. That’s when he noticed something that immediately concerned him.
“Next thing you know, I look down and her face is off color,” Jeremy said. “I assumed it was from the surgery, you know [from] a lack of blood.” Moments later, he says Rachel stopped responding when people in the room tried to get her attention. A nurse began CPR.
Her Husband Speaks Out
Jeremy said he knew something wasn’t right. “I’m just a dumb construction worker, but I could tell something was wrong,” he explained in the video. “But, there was no sense of urgency.” According to Jeremy, the medical team eventually called the plastic surgeon back into the room to assess the situation. He said the surgeon then instructed staff to call 911.
Rachel was rushed by ambulance to TriHealth Bethesda North Hospital, where she was placed on life support. But the damage had already been done. “She was without oxygen for over six minutes,” Jeremy said. “… I was told last night that she’s brain dead.”
In the days that followed, the family faced the unimaginable decision of removing Rachel from life support. A GoFundMe created to support the family described her as someone who touched many lives. “Rachel was truly full of life. She loved adventure, cherished her family deeply, and lived as an example of what community and compassion should look like,” the fundraiser reads. “When someone needed help, Rachel was always the first person to step forward.”
The Internet Offers Support
She leaves behind her husband Jeremy and their three children, Tristan, Alec, and Livi. The family has allegedly obtained a lawyer but has not yet filed a lawsuit against the surgeon involved in the procedure. Jeremy has made it clear that he wants answers about what went wrong. “To me, it looks like incompetence. Somebody dropped the ball here,” he said.
“Something definitely went wrong! And someone is to blame!” one person commented. “Vanity is a horrible thing,” said another. “Very sad! My condolences to the family,” a third comment read. “My condolences to her friends and family. She was beautiful,” a fourth comment read.
As the investigation and legal questions potentially unfold, the Ohio family is now left grieving a woman who simply wanted to feel confident and excited about the next stage of her life, a journey that tragically ended far sooner than anyone expected.
