A woman in Illinois is finally sharing a story she says has stayed with her for years. Not because she wanted attention, but because the memory has never truly left her. For nearly a decade, the unsettling experience has lingered in the back of her mind. It resurfaces every time she passes the object inside her home. Now, after keeping silent for years, she says she is ready to tell the story that still sends chills through her.
Standing in front of the object in question during her TikTok video, the woman introduces viewers to what she calls “Grandpa Lamp.” It is not some antique that looks especially sinister. At first glance, it appears to be a normal, uglyish old lamp. One, her husband brought with him when he moved into her condo back in 2016, while they were still engaged.
She says he arrived with only a few belongings. One of them was that lamp. And according to her, strange things started happening after it crossed the threshold of her home in Illinois.
Night In Illinois That Started Innocently Enough
The eerie encounter happened during a girls’ overnight at her condo. She and her friends had settled in for a night of spooky movies while one friend decided it was the perfect time to dye another friend’s hair jet black. Everything was normal until halfway through the dye process, when the power suddenly went out.
Not just in the condo. Not just in the building. The entire neighborhood had gone dark. The women quickly began scrambling in the pitch black, trying to figure out how to rinse hair dye out before it turned into a complete disaster.
One friend grabbed her phone and used the flashlight while sitting in the bathroom so the hair dye could be washed out in the shower. But as the OP moved around the corner of the condo, she noticed something that she says made her blood run cold.
A faint glow was shining from underneath the spare bedroom door. When she opened the door, she says the only thing producing light in the room was Grandpa Lamp. Even though the entire neighborhood was still without power. And even though no other lights in the condo were working.
A Family Explanation That Did Not Help
The woman says she knows how unbelievable the story sounds. That is why she claims she filmed the lamp that night. But according to her, the footage was later mysteriously destroyed.
She says the video somehow became corrupted, something she fears may have been caused by what she believes could have been a poltergeist attached to the lamp. Whether people believe that or not, she says one thing gives her confidence in what happened was she was not alone.
Her friends were there and saw the glowing lamp with their own eyes. After later telling her grandmother about the experience, she says she received a much calmer explanation. Her grandmother reportedly told her. “It was probably just Grandpa looking out for you and keeping the light on.”
The comment may have been meant as comfort, but the woman says it only made the entire experience feel even more unsettling. Because if that were true, it raised a whole new set of questions she was not sure she wanted answered.
“Not gonna lie. I’m not far into your video and I’m scared the lamp will turn on,” one commenter writes.
“You better go back and check that video! There’s something behind your head,” another warns.
“Don’t make me afraid to go back in my basement,” one more adds.
Husband’s Skeptical Theory
Her husband has a much less paranormal explanation. He believes the lamp may have reacted because it was an older fixture paired with a newer LED bulb, creating some kind of unusual electrical issue.
But she is not buying it. Her biggest problem with that explanation is simple. The entire neighborhood was blacked out. To her, an electrical issue inside one lamp does not explain how it could be glowing when the rest of the town was sitting in darkness.
And that is exactly why the story still unsettles her years later. For years, this Illinois woman kept the story of Grandpa Lamp to herself. But after carrying the memory around for so long, she finally decided it was time to let others hear what happened inside her darkened condo that night.
Whether the glowing lamp was caused by faulty wiring or something far harder to explain, one thing is certain. She wants nothing to do with Grandpa Lamp after dark, or any time for that matter.
