One Texas mom recently proved that a mother’s instinct really does kick into high gear when her child is in danger. What started as a routine daycare drop-off for 32-year-old Lisa Hummer quickly escalated into a terrifying moment that could have ended in tragedy, but instead highlighted a mom’s fierce bravery.
According to KSAT, Hummer had just finished walking her one-year-old twins into their daycare when she spotted something that made her blood run cold: an unidentified man had slipped into the driver’s seat of her SUV, where her five-year-old daughter, Nova, was still strapped in the back. In that split second, Hummer knew she had no time to waste.
The Texas mother didn’t hesitate. She sprinted toward her car and threw herself directly in front of it. “I just ran over there, no hesitation. I just wanted to stand in front of it,” she told reporters. Hummer screamed at the man that her child was inside the vehicle. “My kid is in the car!” she shouted, reportedly repeating herself at least ten times in desperation.
Texas Mother Fights Back Against Would-Be Car Thief To Save Child
The shocking moment, captured on surveillance footage, showed the SUV backing out of the daycare lot as if the thief intended to take off with Nova still inside. But what the suspect didn’t count on was Hummer’s unshakable resolve. She admitted that she was fully “preparing” to be hit by the car, but, as she explained, “I didn’t care. I was going to do whatever it took to keep him from taking her.”
The bold move worked. After glancing at Hummer and then into the backseat where Nova sat, the would-be carjacker had a change of heart. He put the SUV in park, stepped out, and bolted away on foot.
In the aftermath, Hummer had mixed emotions—relief, gratitude, and lingering anger at the suspect. “Thank you for getting out,” she said when asked if she had a message for the thief. “I hope they catch you and that you won’t do this again.”
Reactions Have Been Mixed
The San Antonio Police Department is investigating the incident, but for now, the mom of three is being hailed by her community as a hero. However, not everyone online is in agreement. Many have spoken out about the mother being negligent for leaving her child in the car.
“Why was your kid in the vehicle if you weren’t? Use your brain lady,” one person commented online. “Don’t leave your kids in the car. It’s not rocket science,” another agreed. “Why do these people leave both their children and their keys in the car. Yes in a perfect world you should be able to leave the doors open, the motor running and the keys in the ignition without anything happening, but the world is far from perfect and she engaged in child neglect/endangerment,” a third person wrote.
This Texas story is a stark reminder of two things: the everyday juggling act parents face, and the extraordinary lengths mothers will go to for their kids. Hummer explained that it’s part of her routine to leave Nova in the SUV while dropping off her younger twins because “it’s hard with twins who can’t walk yet to take them both out at the same time.” She typically locks her doors, but this time, the oversight nearly turned disastrous.
