Bold Kentucky Man Refuses To Break $100 Bill And Tries To Barter Before Leaving Gas Station Without Paying Full Price: ‘That’s Not Gonna Work’

Life is expensive, and it’s doesn’t seem that prices will be going down anytime soon. However, one Kentucky man decided the rules of basic commerce didn’t apply to him. Instead of paying his full total at a gas station, he attempted to negotiate an IOU over a single dollar, and when that didn’t work, he walked out without completing the purchase.

The bizarre exchange unfolded at a Kentucky gas station and was caught on camera by TikToker @samdurham2332, who happened to be the cashier dealing with the situation in real time. According to the video, the elderly customer approached the counter with energy drinks totaling $6. Simple transaction, right? Not exactly. Despite having a $100 bill on him, the man made it clear he didn’t “feel like breaking it.”

Rather than using the bill he already had, the customer handed over just $5 and casually asked, “Can I owe you a dollar?” As if paying later for gas station snacks was some kind of gentleman’s agreement. Sam, doing his actual job, explained that he couldn’t allow partial payment or keep tabs on unpaid balances. That’s when the man seemed genuinely offended by the concept of paying in full.

“What do you mean, I can’t owe you a dollar?” the man asked, clearly stunned that a cashier wasn’t willing to spot him credit out of the register. It’s a bold question, especially considering Sam has zero authority to approve IOUs and would likely be the one written up or fired if money came up short.

When the cashier stood firm, the man tried a different angle. He claimed he had done this exact thing before, allegedly back in August, as if that somehow proved his trustworthiness. If anything, it made the situation sound even more questionable. Sam wasn’t buying it and shut the idea down again. “That’s not gonna work, man,” he says.

Still not ready to admit defeat, the man then attempted what can only be described as a last-ditch effort. He pulled out a lottery ticket and offered that instead, apparently hoping that would magically cover the missing dollar. Sam declined multiple times, reiterating that the total was still unpaid. No trades. No IOUs. No exceptions.

‘Can I Owe You A Dollar?’

At that point, the entitled customer finally gave up. Instead of paying the remaining dollar or using his $100 bill like a normal human being, he turned around and walked out of the Kentucky gas station without his drinks, leaving the $5 behind and accomplishing absolutely nothing.

While the Kentucky incident might seem small, it perfectly captures a much larger issue people in the service industry deal with daily: customers who believe rules bend for them simply because they say so. Whether it’s refusing to break a bill, arguing over pennies, or expecting special treatment, entitlement like this slows everything down and puts workers in uncomfortable positions for no reason.
