There are few things more guaranteed to divide the internet than a drive-thru pay-it-forward chain. One Kentucky woman recently found herself in the middle of that debate after sharing the moment she decided to bring a coffee shop pay-it-forward streak to a screeching halt.
Victoria Roberts, a Kentucky stay-at-home mom who posts on TikTok as @victoriaroberts, went viral after recounting an experience that many drivers have probably faced but few are willing to admit. She stopped for her usual coffee and received some unexpected news from the barista.
According to Roberts, the employee informed her that the customer ahead of her had already covered the cost of her drink. Even better, it wasn’t an isolated act of kindness. Apparently, multiple customers had been paying for the orders behind them throughout the morning.
Kentucky Woman Refuses To Continue Pay It Forward Chain
For some people, that would immediately trigger the question: Do I continue the chain? For Roberts, the answer came quickly. As she sat in her vehicle holding her iced coffee, she explained that while she appreciated the free drink, she had no plans to keep the streak going.
She looked at the vehicle behind her and noticed something important. There were multiple people inside. That’s when she decided the chain was ending with her. Rather than potentially paying significantly more than the cost of her own order, Roberts happily accepted the free coffee and moved on with her day.
Her reasoning was simple. Why spend substantially more money than she planned just because someone else started a trend? The video quickly attracted attention online, with viewers passionately debating whether ending a pay-it-forward chain is selfish or simply practical.
Interestingly, Roberts later explained that the barista didn’t pressure her at all. In fact, she said the employee remained friendly throughout the interaction and never even asked whether she planned to continue the chain, per The Mary Sue.
She recalled that the worker simply mentioned the ongoing streak and handed over the drink. Roberts also revealed that this wasn’t her first experience with drive-thru generosity. Over the years, she’s both participated in pay-it-forward chains and chosen not to continue them.
Many People Agreed With Her
That balanced perspective may be why so many people related to her story. After all, while these chains are intended to spread kindness, they can sometimes create an uncomfortable situation. A customer expecting to spend a few dollars on a coffee may suddenly feel obligated to cover a much larger order from the vehicle behind them.
Some former baristas have even suggested that these chains can slow down service and create unnecessary confusion during busy rushes. Roberts doesn’t seem particularly passionate either way. She acknowledged that paying for someone else’s order can be a thoughtful gesture. At the same time, she doesn’t believe anyone should feel guilty for accepting a free drink and moving on.
“Every train has a caboose,” one person said online. “I usually pay it forward to the baristas,” said another. “It has to end at some point and that’s with me,” a third person weighed in. “This is why I use mobile order,” a fourth comment read.
While the internet continues debating the proper etiquette of pay-it-forward chains, Roberts offered a reminder that even acts of kindness have practical limits. Somebody has to be the person who ends the chain eventually.
This time, that person just happened to be a Kentucky woman who looked in her rearview mirror, saw three people waiting behind her, and decided she’d already received enough generosity for one morning.
