It’s finally happening BookTok girlies! Netflix is officially giving the people what they want and stepping onto the ice. The streaming giant has announced a series adaptation of Hannah Grace’s bestselling romance novel Icebreaker, bringing one of BookTok’s biggest sensations to the screen.

The news has already sent fans of the novel into a frenzy, as readers eagerly await casting announcements and a first look at the highly anticipated series. After the success of HBO’s Heated Rivalry adaptation and Prime Video’s Off Campus, it seems only natural that Icebreaker be adapted as well.

Netflix To Adapt Hannah Grace’s Icebreaker

Originally released in 2022, Icebreaker quickly became a publishing phenomenon thanks in large part to BookTok, the book-loving community on TikTok that has helped turn numerous romance novels into bestsellers. The novel spent an impressive 70 consecutive weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and has sold nearly five million copies worldwide, making it one of the most successful contemporary romance books of recent years.

The story follows Anastasia Allen, a fiercely determined figure skater whose dream is to compete at the highest levels of her sport. Her carefully planned life is thrown into chaos when an accident forces her team to share a rink with the university’s hockey team. Enter Nate Hawkins, the hockey team’s popular captain and a rising star with professional aspirations of his own. As the two athletes find themselves spending more time together, rivalry and frustration slowly give way to undeniable chemistry.

The enemies-to-lovers storyline, combined with college sports, emotional character development, and plenty of romantic tension, helped make the novel a favorite among romance readers. The book also launched Hannah Grace’s popular Maple Hills series, which later expanded with Wildfire and Daydream.

Netflix appears confident that Icebreaker could become its next major romance hit. The streamer has enjoyed tremendous success adapting beloved novels into binge-worthy television, with series such as Bridgerton helping to prove that audiences have a strong appetite for book-to-screen adaptations. Netflix executives have specifically pointed to the passionate fandom surrounding Icebreaker and the growing popularity of hockey romance stories as reasons for moving forward with the project.

Fans are so excited

The adaptation will be written and executive produced by Amanda Lasher, whose previous credits include Gossip Girl and The Bold Type. Jade Bartlett, who developed the adaptation and wrote the pilot episode, will also serve as an executive producer. Podcast superstar Alex Cooper is attached to the project through her production company, Unwell Productions.

At the moment, Netflix has not announced who will play Anastasia and Nate, and an official release date has yet to be revealed. However, that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating about dream casting choices across social media.

“Make it 22 episodes please,” one person suggested via X. “Please stay true to the book,” said another. “Please don’t ruin this,” a third person added.

With romance adaptations continuing to dominate streaming platforms and the hockey romance genre experiencing a major surge in popularity, Icebreaker appears poised to become one of Netflix’s most talked-about upcoming series. If the adaptation can capture the chemistry, emotion, and addictive romance that made the novel a global sensation, viewers may soon find themselves just as obsessed with Anastasia and Nate as readers have been for years.
