According to reports, Louisville, Kentucky mother Tiphanee Lee had been receiving repeated phone calls from her son’s school about alleged behavioral problems involving teachers and staff. Administrators at Field Elementary School reportedly claimed her son, Semaj, had been acting aggressively toward adults in the classroom.
But there was one major issue with the story she was being told. Semaj is autistic and non-verbal, and according to his mother, the behavior described by school officials didn’t match the little boy she was seeing every day once he returned home. Instead of accepting the explanations at face value, Lee decided she needed answers herself.

And honestly, this is where the story takes a heartbreaking turn. Determined to understand what was really happening during the school day, Lee and her family reportedly came up with a plan to document what Semaj experienced in class. On May 13, she hid a tiny camera in her son’s locs before sending him off to school.
“I ordered a camera to be my son’s eyes, his ears, his voice,” Lee explained. The footage and audio reportedly captured by the device have now sparked outrage online.
According to reports about the recordings, one teacher’s assistant could allegedly be heard saying things like “get off me, boy” and “go away” toward the child. The audio reportedly became increasingly tense and chaotic throughout portions of the recording.
At one point, Semaj could reportedly be heard clapping before screaming something his mother said only happens when he becomes overwhelmed or distressed. For many people following the story online, that detail alone was difficult to hear.
“Our child was put in a situation where he was scared, overwhelmed, and powerless. And while this was happening, there were adults in the room who did nothing to stop it,” Lee said during a news conference. “This is unacceptable.”
The Internet Is Stunned By The Accusations
The recordings allegedly contained other troubling moments as well, including conversations between staff members discussing marijuana and edibles in front of the child. Lee expressed heartbreak over what she says her family uncovered after trusting the school to properly care for their son.
“We trusted his school to protect him, to care for him, and to treat him with dignity,” she said. “Instead, he was harmed, silenced, and failed by the very people who were supposed to keep him safe.” The story quickly spread across social media, where commenters reacted with anger, sadness, and frustration over the alleged treatment of a vulnerable child who cannot verbally advocate for himself.
“Teachers should be forced to wear body cams,” one person commented online. “There needs to be severe consequences for this criminal behavior. This makes me furious,” said another. “This is horrific,” a third person chimed in.
Jefferson County Public Schools has reportedly confirmed that an investigation is underway. According to reports, the staff member at the center of the allegations is currently not permitted inside the school building.
Meanwhile, several city council members have also reportedly expressed concerns about whether proper protections for special needs students are actually being followed consistently within classrooms. Lee is now reportedly pushing for legislation requiring cameras inside all ECE classrooms, arguing that non-verbal children deserve safeguards and accountability while at school.
