Some people say parenthood changes you. Others, apparently, just change their hairstyle. In Pikeville, Kentucky, a 23-year-old mom recently made headlines, and not for anything remotely responsible.
Kentucky mom Morgan Chapman allegedly left her two young children, ages 2 and 4, home alone while she told a neighbor to “keep an eye on them” so she could go smoke. Police were called to her apartment around 9 p.m. Monday after receiving a domestic disturbance report. Upon arrival, officers found the kids opening the door, realizing immediately they had been unsupervised for hours.
According to the criminal complaint, Chapman reportedly asked a neighbor around 5 p.m., four hours earlier, to watch the children while she got high. When police confronted her, she claimed she only left the kids “for a couple of minutes” at a neighbor’s house. The complaint also notes that Chapman had bloodshot, glassy eyes, smelled strongly of alcohol, and was slurring her words, according to the New York Post.
Kentucky Mom Shows Up… With Attitude
When Chapman was booked, she somehow managed to turn her head, put her hands on her hips, and grin at the camera as if she were posing for Instagram. Wearing a white-and-red-striped V-neck T-shirt and sporting bleach-blond hair, she looked eerily ready for a social media selfie rather than a criminal mugshot.
Child protective services got involved, and the children were placed in the custody of Chapman’s ex-husband, Jordan Keith Chapman. He shared on Facebook that his kids “didn’t even know where she was” and sarcastically referenced her actions as joining the “mom of the year club.” Chapman has since posted bail, and details about her lawyer remain unclear.
“The dad stepped up for his kids,” comments one reader.
“What a disgrace!!!!!!!” writes another.
“Well, there goes the ‘Mom of the Year’ award given out yearly in Pikeville, Kentucky,” snarks another.
It’s safe to say that the Kentucky mom’s mugshot will live on in internet infamy. Between leaving toddlers home alone and striking a pose worthy of a filtered selfie, it’s a case that’s equal parts shocking, ridiculous, and almost comical. That is, if you can look past the serious danger she allegedly put her children in. Some parenting lessons are learned the hard way… others just make headlines.
