Brad Pitt’s California Family Rift Remains in Spotlight as Zahara and Maddox Make New Public Move: ‘Some Serious Manipulation’
It is no Hollywood secret that when it comes to divorces, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie‘s has been one of the nastiest celebrity splits. Their ongoing California battle has brought not only heartache to the family, but it has also added a lot of embarrassment and humiliation along the way.
Not only is there a lot of hard feelings between Angie and Brad, but it has seriously bled to the children, and it’s forced them to allegedly choose sides between their parents. With most choosing their mom over their dad, they are making their decisions very public.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s Daughter Zahara Takes Another Legal Step to Drop Pitt Surname in California
Another chapter in the Pitt-Jolie family story is unfolding in California, where Zahara has taken another legal step toward formally removing “Pitt” from her surname.

According to TMZ, court records show Zahara has completed one of California’s required legal procedures by publishing notice of her name change petition in the Los Angeles Daily Journal once each week for four consecutive weeks. Under California’s legal process, the published notice gives anyone who wishes to object an opportunity to file a written response before the scheduled court hearing.
TMZ reports the notices appeared on June 16, June 23, June 30, and July 7. Zahara is scheduled to appear for a hearing on September 28, where a judge can approve the request if no legal objections are filed. If approved, her legal name would change from Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt to Zahara Marley Jolie.
Zahara Follows a Path Already Taken by Her Siblings
The reported filing is the latest indication that several of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s children have chosen not to publicly use the Pitt surname.
TMZ notes that Zahara has not regularly used “Pitt” publicly for some time, and her legal petition follows a similar process completed by her sister Shiloh. In 2024, Shiloh successfully petitioned to legally remove “Pitt” from her last name after completing California’s required publication process.
Other siblings have also appeared to distance themselves from the surname in public settings. Maddox has used “Jolie” in some public contexts, while Vivienne was credited without “Pitt” during a Broadway production, drawing attention from fans following the family’s long-running legal dispute.
While each child has handled the situation differently, the public changes have continued to fuel discussion about the lasting impact of the highly publicized split between their parents.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s Relationship Timeline
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie first met while filming Mr. & Mrs. Smith, which was released in 2005. Their relationship quickly became one of Hollywood’s most talked-about romances, and over the following years they built a family together, raising six children—Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne.
After nearly a decade together, the couple married in 2014.
Just two years later, Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, beginning what became one of the entertainment industry’s longest and most closely followed legal battles. The years that followed included disputes involving child custody, financial matters, and the former couple’s shared ownership of Château Miraval, the French winery that became another point of legal conflict.
Although their divorce was finalized years later, legal disagreements continued, keeping both actors in court long after their marriage ended.
Divorce Can Place Children in Difficult Positions
Family law experts and mental health professionals have long noted that high-conflict divorces can create significant emotional challenges for children, regardless of whether the family is in the public eye.
Researchers say children may feel caught between parents, experience divided loyalties, or worry that showing affection toward one parent could upset the other. Every family’s situation is different, and experts caution against assuming the reasons behind an individual child’s decisions without firsthand knowledge.
The American Psychological Association notes that ongoing parental conflict—not divorce itself—is often one of the biggest factors affecting children’s emotional well-being following a separation. Mental health professionals generally encourage parents to reduce conflict whenever possible and support healthy relationships between children and both parents when it is safe and appropriate.
In celebrity families, those personal decisions can become highly public, often leading to speculation that may not reflect the full picture behind the scenes.
Brad Pitt’s Camp Responds
According to TMZ, a source close to Brad Pitt believes Angelina Jolie has contributed to the growing distance between Pitt and several of the couple’s children. The source described the latest name change development as another chapter in what they characterized as an ongoing estrangement.
Neither Pitt nor Jolie has publicly commented on Zahara’s reported court filing.
As with many high-profile family disputes, much of what occurs privately remains known only to those directly involved.
The Family Story Continues to Evolve
Whether Zahara’s petition receives final approval later this year, the filing represents another public development in a family story that has continued to make headlines for nearly a decade. For now, attention remains on the upcoming California court hearing, where a judge is expected to decide whether the requested name change will become official.
“There’s something very sinister about Angelina. To alienate children from their father is disgusting,” one fan comments.
“There’s some serious manipulation going on in the background,” another adds.
“I could see them doing this for attention, maybe his, ” one more suggests.
While the legal process may be straightforward, the emotions surrounding one of Hollywood’s most closely watched family relationships continue to draw widespread public interest.
