While on any kind of public transportation, it is common courtesy to allow the less physically able passengers to sit down. While this is not a mandatory practice, it does appear to be a pretty common occurrence. However, in a recently posted TikTok video, an elderly New York woman is seen attempting to pay someone just to be able to sit down on the train. Teh video now has around 2K likes and 64K views, as it continues to strive for viral status.
The TikTok begins with the elderly woman already on the train. Although she is visibly struggling to stay balanced while standing, as the vehicle moves. In the video, the New York woman can be heard stating that she is in fact 80 years of age and also has osteoporosis. She then asked if anyone would be willing to give up their seat on the train for her, so she doesn’t have to stand. The older woman then states that she will “Give you everything in my pockets for a seat.” Unfortunately, that does also include some cash. The woman then pulls out a few bills from her pockets.

However, despite the woman’s pleading, only the person recording responds to her. Yet, the TikTok’s comment section would actually call out the person filming. “The crazy part is you’re sitting and recording,‘ wrote one. “This is horrible. Why didn’t you get up and let her sit?” asked another. “This is really sad,” stated one other commenter. Finally, one said, “I can’t believe this is where we are now,” in regard to not a single person giving up their seat. On the bright side, at least the social media users are holding the person filming accountable for their lack of action.
However, the video would then undoubtedly end without much of an actual ending to this interaction. Hopefully, the elderly New York woman was able to find somewhere to sit, as osteoarthritis is a serious medical condition. As for the other passengers on the train, especially the younger ones, they should feel ashamed.
Hopefully, this TikTok can serve as a reminder that it doesn’t cost anything to be a good person. This elderly New York woman just wanted a seat and even offered to pay for one. However, nobody was kind enough to offer theirs up. With the holidays right around the corner, people should be helping each other more than ever, as this was truly disappointing behavior from the train passengers.
