A Pennsylvania woman is urging consumers to pay closer attention at checkout after what she describes as a troubling discovery during a recent visit to a Dollar Tree store in Philadelphia. The woman shared her experience on TikTok, where her video has sparked a lively discussion about card skimming devices and the importance of checking payment terminals before inserting a debit or credit card.
In the video, the woman explains that the incident began while she was attempting to make a purchase. As she prepared to pay, she noticed something unusual about the card reader at the register. She claims it appeared to have two keypads.
Concerned by what she was seeing, the woman said she immediately brought the issue to the attention of the store manager. However, she says the manager initially dismissed her concerns and attempted to convince her that nothing was wrong. The discussion reportedly continued for several minutes. During that time, the cashier also sided with the manager, insisting there was no second keypad attached to the machine.
Pennsylvania Shopper Says the Device Moved When She Used Her Card
Despite being told she was mistaken, the Pennsylvania woman says she remained convinced that something was off. She explained that when she inserted her card and pulled it back out, the keypad appeared to shift. According to her account, the movement revealed what looked like another keypad underneath the one visible on the surface.
The shopper continued pressing the issue and eventually pointed directly to the area she believed was suspicious. That’s when the situation reportedly changed. According to the video, the manager removed the top portion of the keypad, revealing a second keypad underneath. The woman claims the manager sounded surprised by the discovery.
By that point, other customers in the store had reportedly begun paying attention to the exchange unfolding near the register. The woman says the manager then attempted to walk toward the office while holding the detached device. She responded by informing him that her mother had been recording the incident and that she planned to contact police.
She also claimed the cashier had previously told her that her card had generated a “wrong PIN” message during the transaction. Out of caution, the woman says she immediately locked her card after leaving the store. According to the Dollar Tree shopper, both her mother and a camera attached to her glasses captured the encounter on video.
How Card Skimmers Work and What Consumers Should Watch For
After the footage appeared online, viewers quickly began speculating about what may have happened. Some commenters suggested the device could have been a card skimmer. Others questioned how such a device could have ended up on the payment terminal in the first place.
Several commenters even speculated that store employees or management may have known about the device. However, it is important to note that there is currently no public evidence supporting those claims. Any suggestion that the manager or store staff were involved remains purely speculative.
Hollywood News Daily was unable to independently verify the claims made in the TikTok video. It is also unclear whether law enforcement was contacted or whether the device was ultimately determined to be a card skimmer. According to the FBI, skimming occurs when criminals install unauthorized devices on payment terminals, ATMs, or point-of-sale systems to capture card information and sometimes PIN numbers. The stolen data can then be used to create counterfeit cards or make fraudulent purchases.
Consumer protection experts recommend taking a few seconds to inspect card readers before using them. Warning signs can include loose or crooked keypads, bulky attachments, parts that appear to sit on top of existing equipment, or readers that move when touched. The FDIC advises consumers to be cautious if a card reader appears damaged, loose, or altered in any way.
A Reminder to Stay Vigilant
If a device looks suspicious, experts recommend avoiding the terminal. Next, notify store management, contact local law enforcement if necessary, and immediately monitor or lock payment cards if there is concern that information may have been compromised.

As electronic payment scams continue evolving, experts say a few extra seconds spent checking a card reader could help prevent a much bigger headache later on
