Virginia Couple Go To Dinner To Celebrate Anniversary But Leave Furious After Seeing What Was Written On Their Receipt: ‘Unacceptable’
A dinner out in Virginia reportedly turned into a jaw-dropping mess after a couple discovered what appeared to be a racial slur printed directly on their restaurant receipt. And now, the internet is debating whether the situation was ignorance, carelessness, or something much worse.
According to reports, Soncerae “Sunni” Long and her fiancé, Hunter Hughes, spoke out after one of Long’s friends visited Crazy Crab in Fairfax, Virginia, for dinner over the weekend. Everything seemed normal until the bill arrived. At the bottom of the receipt for the $133.87 meal was a phrase containing an offensive racial slur.
And understandably, the table was stunned. Long said her friend immediately questioned staff members about the wording after noticing it printed on the check. Instead of getting clear answers, she allegedly felt dismissed by employees at the Virginia restaurant, per Atlanta Black Star.
“She was taken aback by that,” Long explained. “[An employee] brushed her off. She basically told her this person is from Asia, he doesn’t know the language, he didn’t know any better.”
Virginia Couple Shocked When They See Racial Slur On Restaurant Receipt
That explanation didn’t exactly calm the situation down. According to Long, her friend got the impression that staff mainly wanted to avoid a bigger public confrontation inside the restaurant. Meanwhile, the server allegedly appeared visibly uncomfortable during the interaction. Long claimed the employee looked embarrassed and flushed red after the receipt was questioned.
As the story started spreading online, attention quickly shifted toward the restaurant’s response. A manager identified as “Rez” later spoke about the situation and reportedly claimed the employee responsible had been joking around with kitchen staff and entered the slur into the restaurant’s system without realizing it would eventually print on a customer’s receipt.
“Who would write something like that? I’ve been in this industry for 42 years, and I’ve never seen anything like that,” the manager reportedly said. Still, the explanation only fueled more criticism online. Many people questioned why anyone would think using that word in any context was appropriate in the first place.
Things became even messier when confusion arose over whether the employee involved had actually been fired. The manager reportedly told media outlets the worker had been terminated immediately. However, Hughes later disputed that claim, saying their own recorded phone conversation with the manager painted a different picture.
“He never said he was terminated,” Hughes claimed. The controversy only escalated from there. During one of the phone calls, the manager allegedly attempted to compare the racial slur to ordinary swear words, which did not go over well.
The Internet Is Furious
“I mean, what if he used it in the wrong place, then what?” Rez reportedly asked during the discussion. “But he did use it in the wrong place,” Hughes responded. That exchange alone has people online absolutely spiraling over the situation.
Long also noted that she personally had not seen any Black employees working at the restaurant, which added another uncomfortable layer to the public discussion surrounding the incident. “This is unacceptable,” one person declared online. “I will never eat there again,” said another. “Lawyer up,” a third person wrote.
At this point, social media users seem split between those who believe the situation stemmed from ignorance and those who feel there’s simply no acceptable excuse for the word appearing on a customer receipt under any circumstance.
Either way, what was supposed to be an ordinary dinner in Virginia has now turned into a full-blown viral controversy that the restaurant likely won’t escape anytime soon.
